Uhh...

I think it's just a fan. He says in one post "Been playing for 25 years." THE Ed Bickert was born in 1932 and has been playing for well over 50 years...

Sorry. :-( CS

Boy, if that didn't suck the energy out of this thread!

Too bad. I like Ed Bickert too.

Whoa,

No, I'm not the real Ed Bickert! The real Ed didn't even have a computer last I heard.

My real name is Glen. I'm 37 years old. I am a huge fan of Ed's and have enjoyed his recordings for many, many years. I have nothing in common with Ed. I have never met him. The closest I have been to knowing him was knowing someone, who knew someone who recorded a CD with him a few years ago. That's it folks. Sorry to dissapoint.

After seeing this post I'll put a disclaimer as my signature. I can't play like Ed and I sure can not speak for Ed.

But thanks for the Hellos anyway, even if they were meant for someone else. ;)

Guys,

it would be great if you could be so kind to call me "Charlie Christian", since I'm a fan and I've nothing in common with him

Who's Ed Bickert? I'm guessing he's a guitar player... 8)

Ed Bickert is a great Jazz Guitarist from Canada who did some albums with sax great Paul Desmond. He's an amazing guitarist, but for some reason he never achieved the fame that other guitarists like Jim Hall and Pat Martino did. He plays a Tele with a humbucker in the bridge.

Locally, I have heard that Ed Bickert is retired from playing - personally I hope it's just a sabbatical!

I've seen Ed play around this town since I was a kid. He's played with everyone from the Boss Brass to Paul Desmond. It would have been amazing to have him drop in for a chat and tell us about that beat up old tele.

Oh yeah, Ed Bickert can play a LITTLE straight ahead jazz on a telecaster, not one to different from what Keith Richards likes to use.

Check him out on the Concord label. I especially like Third Floor Richard, I Wished On The Moon, and a duets album he did with Lorne Lofsky called This Is New. But his work with Paul Desmond, of Take Five/Dave Brubeck fame is also legendary. Unfortunately, some of his stuff is out of print at the moment.

I would doubt Ed Bickert even has a computer. He does not even have his own web site.

His last recording was done in a trio setting, with double bass and sax, with Mike Murley as the leader:
Murley, Bickert, Wallace: Live at the Senator

Very sadly, Ed Bickert retired. He told me that he is no longer interested in "MUSIC" (capital letters his) but not why. Rumors have it he fell from the roof when he helped his son building a house, but I don't know whether that is true. I never met him, but we exchanged a few letters.

One of the greatest players of all time IMO !!!

The friend who knew someone. He spoke with Mike Murley a few times. (My last name is Murley...no relation but that's how the correspondance started..go figure). My friend is a fellow guitar player and has literally idolized Bickert for years and years. He tried to find out information about Ed's signature guitar. That beat to shyte tele.

He didn't find out much, but he heard a lot of nice stories about Ed. He also heard why he stopped playing. It wasn't because he lost interest in the music. From what I understand it was medical issues. But that happened a few years ago. Who knows nowadays.

I would sure love to hear Ed on a new CD. If you want to hear him in his prime, pick up the latest re-release, "At Last." You can get it off Amazon. Also, "At the Garden Party", "Live at the Senator" and "Days Gone By" are fantastic.

He has two recordings (that I know of) with his friend (and student for a while) Lorne Lofsky. The first recording is "This is New" and is fantastic. The other is "...And Friend" and is still currently only available on vynil. But WELL worth the listen if you can play it. The cover has a pic of his beat-up Tele in full view. Even has his ashtray on it.

Teles are very famous for their signature sound. And if you're on this forum you guys/gals probably know how incredible versatile that tele sound is. But in the jazz circle the tele is the most highly respected solid body jazz guitar. And there's not many solid bodies that can pull that off.

As a side note, if you're not familiar with jazz on the Tele pick up "Solo Guitar" by the recently deceased, Ted Greene. The CD, as the title suggests, is just Ted and a tele. You may have seen his books (Chord Chemistry) but to hear him is incredible. And that sound is ALL Tele. One of the greatest Jazz cds of all time, and in my very humble opinion, one of the best Tele cds of all time.

Cheers and thatnks for the warm welcome. I like this forum much better than the "The blah blah" forum. Lots of information around here and a lot of really nice people.

Hi, I'm aware that many on this forum have talked about one of my favorite jazz guitarists, Ed Bickert, and are aware that his Tele's humbucker pickup is in the neck position, not the bridge position, but I thought I'd mention it here in case Dana hadn't read the other Bickert posts.

Love this forum!
