Might just be me, but I could never justify these kind of prices. I don't know any gigging musicians who could. Would any of you actually pay this much, and then take it to your local gin mill to play a couple of sets for $50 a night?

Well, it wouldn't be so bad if these guitars were being brought on stage and played by some well healed musicians.

If I had $16K for a Tele, sure I'd take it to the gig. I'd tell everyone it was a Relic, and they'd tell me that they could tell from a mile away.

None of my $2K guitars have been destroyed or stolen on the gig in all these years, so I'm not going to treat that one any different. However, aside from the cool factor there's no way I'm going to believe that it sounds or plays better than a brand new $3K custom Tele from one of the many fine builders today, and I'd rather have five of those.

Id go with Players grade any time..

you can get a fifties for the price of a top custom shop...

you gotta look and be patient...

I agree. I've said this a bunch of times here, but the few vintage Fenders I've owned have had refinishes or one replaced pickup or whatever, and cost me around the same as a high-end Fender Custom Shop guitar. The last vintage Tele I bought was a 52 from Elderly about 3 or so years ago and it was just a bit more than a Custom Shop price.

Definitely a good deal for the cash-conscious player.

Thanks for the comments on the Iridium Les Paul thread. The benefit was great. My buddy John was the bass player in the band before you.

Have you ever seen the guitar that Mike Flynn of Flynn guitars gigs with? It's a gen-u-wine '57. He carries it around in a gig bag and will let anyone take a close up look at it, and play it if you're nice. It's light as a feather and has killer tone. Check out his band sometime he plays with an R & B group called Jimy Rogers and the Mauds. Here is the link:

Were you there when Frank Portolese played in the jam at the end? I took some bebop lessons from him in 2004, and that Strat of his is a '59 (in a gigbag ;) ). Best sounding strat ever (kind of sounded like a tele...)

A year and 1/2 ago maybe you could have, but now player grade refin's are fetching about 10K and up depending on what state of originality you are talking about. If any one finds a nice early blackguard refin with mostly stocks part for under 10K you'll be doing good imo. I saw a reliced refined original 51 no-caster done by Jay Black with otherwise all stock parts for 19K and it has since been sold. Who knows where all this going , but it sure ain't goin' down in price any time soon. :D

I had to leave just before that. I did get to check out his Strat though. Very cool....the perfect vintage relic. IMHO.
