Hmmm....
I, for one, would love to have that Tele. I don't like the neck but I could live with it. I've always wanted a Lucite guitar.
(edit--I wouldn't want it for $1200 though. Joel

however...
You have to give the guitar credit for the string-through body, vintage style bridge, and body-mounted neck pickup. It seems like that would be more trouble than it's worth on a lucite body. Too bad they don't have a traditional jack cup. That would have been a nice 'how to' picture to have to show how that thing is installed!

Dave-
Lucite doesn't come in a size thick enough to support installing a vintage jackcup. It's been a little while since I checked into availability so I don't remeber for sure, but it seems like the maximum thickness is like 7/8" or so. Prolly you can get it thicker, but not for any reasonable amount of money. I been thinkin' about doing a Lucite Esquire..... -Michael Charter Member S. Texas He-Man Emoticon Haters Local #316

Ampeg reissued the Dan Armstrong guitars not too long ago, so there must be someone out there who does lucite greater than 7/8".
I was always turned off by the Dan Armstrongs by the big gash in the body where you slide the pickup in and out, and turned off by all the other lucite guitars by the control cavities. I think the ideal lucite guitar would be an Esquire with no control plate, and the jack mounted behind the bridge. That's as clean as you can get.

I completely agree with Bens comments. I have always been uncomfortable about the sliding in and out pickup thing and feel that, that guitar would work great as an Esquire.
I have to say that there was once a time where Greg Ginn had one of the coolest guitar sounds ever with that Dan Armstrong. I don't know how he did it but it was pretty amazing live. |

I've always wanted one too! I can't remember the dimensions needed for a tele body right now, but you can get cast acrylic sheets up to 1¼ inches. A 2ft x 3ft sheet is $194.78. Is acrylic machinable? I guess I should know being a mechanical engineer and all....

That's cool. Wouldn't be my main axe, but I would definitely play it. Definitely.

Years ago I got a chance to play Nile Rogers' lucite Strat..
from his days touring with Chic. It was the heaviest electric I've ever played. My poor left shoulder still aches when I think about it!

Butch
you got a deal. We'll split the cost. You pay for the guitar and I'll pay the shipping. Sound good?? I'd probably have to borrow the money just for the shipping the way things look this week.

You know... On closer examination, if one were to build one of these things with an opaque pickguard, one could route the wiring path upwards to hit the control cavity from the end where it dips into pickguardland. Then one could put a Strat-style jack plate on the back, at the end of the control cavity.
That way there would be no ugly visable wiring running through the body. Ohhhhhhhh man. Sign me up. Teles are perfectfor this. Now to get it done with black pickguard, or mirriored?
