Danny Gatton - Mr. Sandman

Whew.....I just heard the 1989 bootleg of Gatton doing "Mr. Sandman" and I don't think I've ever been more knocked out in my life!

I do my best to hybrid pick but my thumpickin' pals tell me all the time that there's just some things you can do with a thumpick that you can't accomplish with pick and fingers, no matter how hard you try. I've always felt that Gatton could do ANYTHING a thumbpicker could...but now there's just no question in my mind!

Sorry, I know that's nothin' new to you guys, but I just heard that track for the very first time and I'm still tryin' to catch my breath! :D

I agree Mandy. The first time I heard that I went nuts. It takes someone like Gatton to totally rejuvinate a tune you've only heard a thousand times. Then when someone like that does it in their own special way it is like hearing it for the first time. I hear something new every time I listen to his version. It is absolutely groovy!

It's an unofficial recording from 1989 - it's for sale on Ebay from time to time, a friend of mine just made me a copy and I'm just knocked out....unbelievable! I've been a Gatton fan since I was 14 (unfortunately the same year in which he passed) and I'm always just in awe of the guy...but that Mr. Sandman probably takes the cake! Whew....haha! :D

... our own Mr. Jim Campilongo's version??? WONDERFUL! It's on his second album, I believe. Jim has a way of keeping the wild technique stuff in check while concentrating on melody and soul, although it's very apparent that the wild technique stuff is in there too. Jim's playing hit me like a hammer the same way that Danny Gatton's and Roy Buchanan's did when I first heard them many years ago. He just never really comes out guns blazing like Danny and Roy B. would do.

I mean that as a compliment Jim, if you're reading this.

I play "Mr. Sandman" at all of my gigs, but I only play the intro, verse melody, and back to the intro again and out. It's less than a minute long, and it's really just a teaser for the crowd while I think of what I'm going to play next. I have my own little way of doing the intro so that the notes sustain over each other like the old vocal hit does. I wish that I could tab it out for everyone. It's real ackward, but sounds nice. It goes over well with the crowd, and sometimes I even get requests to do it (which blows me away for something that's basically a joke that lasts less than a minute). My version is a far cry from what Jim's (and I'm sure Danny's, though I've never heard it) is. Ya really gotta hear Jim do it!

Nice to be back with y'all after a little time off.

Whew! I just posted my version of the intro to "Mr. Sandman" over at the "Sugar-Free Tab" section for whoever may be interested. I'd really like to know how Jim Campilongo does it. I haven't heard it in a while, but I don't think he does it like this. Anybody know???

Well I got that Sandman song with Danny from Kazaa the other day. Haven´t had the time to lissen to it.
That´s the way I do it download a lot and lissen later.
But with all this, I gotta give a listen right now!

-I agree with you trag-o-caster I just got jim s loose I love roy danny hellecasters etc but I love the way jim has a sense of control over the harmony some intresting voicings maybe to some he sounds less flashy but in a good way.Joe goldmark the steel player is really good I'm getting more into doing steel stuff on my tele actually when I get some dough (I'm a musician) could take a while jim got some intresting looking stuff lessons on steel for tele.Oh ya Chet atkins version is very killer I think jim may have copped some ideas from him ,Jim?

I figured out Danny's intro...and the rest is just way above my head. I've never heard our own Jim do it, but I've heard other rave reviews (I'm really excited to hear it!) so I HAVE to check that out asap! Danny's is pretty much dead on for Chet's version, but what just absolutely took my breath away is that he's using a flatpick and he's not missing a SINGLE note with his Atkins/Travis pickin'. It's not crazy flash (though I gotta admit I sure love that) it's just jaw dropping talent and dedication...his timing is rock solid and the notes just seem to be attached to his fingertips, absolutely amazing...especially when I know he's doing that with a dang flatpick! :D

Thanks for posting the tab to your version trag-o-caster! I'm excited to go check it out! I've just gotta at least try to learn this thang now haha

Joe Goldmark played the heck out of it , and so did the band. I was inspired to play it by a San Francisco virtuoso , Mr Jim Nichols . An awesome , jaw dropping player . I think he copped his version from Chet's . Thanks again you guys !

ps - I've never heard anyone but Jim Nichols play it ......I think.

changes from time to time, but right now I think it is "Sax Fifth Avenue" off of the Redneck Jazz CD. (funny, Tragedy is perhaps my least fav DG song. I guess I'll have to give it a try again) :D

You and me both. What always amazed me about Danny's right hand technique was how comprehensive it was. He had transferred all his banjo patterns and rolls to the guitar, but done with a flatpick and the middle and ring fingers. Ditto for all the Atkins/Travis stuff. He also had a bunch of things he'd picked up from Lenny Breau, like "rolling" chords with a combination of alternating normal notes with harmonics 12 frets above. AND... he could also play steel guitar with a flat pick, all those rolls and different string combinations.

Plus Danny could also flatpick in the traditional sense like nobody's business. I heard some bluegrass work he had done on a friend's album and it was just as scary as everything else he did.

Favorite Gatton tune? I couldn't pick just one. "In My Room" and "Sky King" come to mind, but so do "Rock Candy," the "Linus and Lucy Theme," "Airmail Special" and a few dozen others.

7 come 11 off Portraits may be the best thing I've ever heard! In the liner notes it says there is video of this performance that has never been released. Please God let me see this someday!!! The tone is KILLER, does anyone know if the reverb is all from the amp or added later? If you have it listen to it again, if not GET IT!!
