Roy Nichols Birthday Today

My Telecaster guitar hero, Roy Nichols, would have been 73 today (Friday October 21st). He was and still is my greatest influence on guitar and the the Telecaster.

Roy playing his '53 Tele live in Philadelphia 1970, Haggard's "Fightin' Side of Me":

Roy's teeth marks on a pick I treasure...thank you Mrs. Nichols!!

Since I'll be just listening for a while, tell me THE CD to get by the man and I'll run out and find it today!

Happy B-Day Roy.

Thanks

Thanks to Terry and everyone who responded to this post. I've got about three favorite pickers and Roy is probably number 1 of those three.

Hey, Terry, I think I may have some of those Fender picks - like the one you posted - in a trunk somewhere (sans teeth marks). If I can locate them, I'll send you some...might help you get over that "beginner's slump" you're in. :D :D :D .

I sure hope a bunch of folks have availed themselves of The Guitar Styles Of Roy Nichols DVD. I'm still just floored by the production. I may not sound like Roy, but I'm a greatly improved player after working with it. I get a particular pleasure from knowing that the proceeds are going to Mrs. Nichols.

The Fundamental Soldering Skills DVD is great, too. Early on, I used to do my own "soldering." So did my buddies. We'd jump on stage and the 60 cycle hum would be so bad that we'd have to tune our B's to it and play only in keys with B's in the triads. Since those days, I've spent several decades in the electronics industry. This is the first time I've seen anything that instructs the non-tech well enough that he's able to do musical instrument repair and modification.

Happy Birthday to everyone.

Though I don't play much like him, Roy is at the top of the list of my Tele heroes along with Don Rich, James Burton and Clarence White.
I only got to see him play once, but I'll always remember it. Some fair ground pavillion in San Jose around 1971.

Ironicaly, I've been listening to the "Live in Philadelphia" album every day this week before work. My goal is to learn that "Corrine Corrina" solo before tomorrow! It still blows my mind!! Just so perfect and cool!
