Don Rich Pics

Does anyone know where I can get a fairly close-up pic of Don Richs' sparkle Tele? I'm building a replica. If no pics can anyone provide some info/specs?

Thanks,
Jason

Terry, you really need to pan up a bit in that lower photo...if you know what I mean.

Does anyone know of Don ever playing a guitar like this one? See link. Or was the double bound silver his main axe?

What ever happened to Dons' guitar like this one? I heard Marty Stuart owns the silver one.

I believe Buck owns it- and it's on display at his club, the Crystal Palace, in Bakersfield.

I areally appreciate the pics. I'm planning on building a guitar that looks like Dons with Brents pickup configuration.

No checkerboard binding that I can see on that one...plus no matching headstock.

So he (Don Rich) must have played at least three (3) different sparklecasters over the years...

Silver w/black binding
Gold with checkerboard binding & matching headstock
Gold w/black binding non-matching headstock

Have I missed one?

Ever see that weird maroon Thinline-type thing he used to play on Hee Haw sometimes?

Looked like it might have been a Mosrite?!

How about a Micro-Frets? It seems that I remember something like that.

Don's Tele's

This is a mix of what I do know and what I'm pretty sure of:

Don had two silver sparkle Tele's.
His first one (the original one with black binding) was given to Marty Stuart by Buck Owens:

Don wore out the neck on his second silver sparkle and Fender gave him a rosewood neck. This is the one that Buck plays live:

Don had two gold sparkle Tele's. One of them had the checkerboard binding and matching headstock like Buck's and the one on the Gruhn website that George Fullerton owned. His second one is the one he used on Hee Haw and in Terry's video captures above. It was gold sparkle, black binding, and no sparkle on the headstock.

His red, white, and blue Tele was painted by Semi Mosley. The guitar Jerry's talking about was a Semi Mosley/Mosrite creation and it does look weird! I have a pic of it somewhere, I'll have to look. The headstock does go up like a MicroFrets. It kinda looks like some of those Standel guitars from that era.

The old 50's Tele in some early pics was Buck's.

Both Buck's 50's tele and his gold sparkle are on display at his Crystal Palace. The silver sparkle tele pictured with Marty: I don't know where this guitar is now, but Buck himself told me it was only a loan to Marty. The Silver Sparkle with rosewood replacement neck is also at the Crystal Palace, but is not on display. I was alowed to inspect this guitar, and got a snap of me holding it. That's the guitar in my avatar. This last guitar with the replaced neck, was Don's most played guitar. Hence it needed a new neck after wearing much of the finish off and wearing down the frets. Zac

Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to buy a silver metal flake double bound body. Then strip the hardware and electronics off my modified 50's Classic Esquire and slap it on the body with the Esquire neck. Then I'll "relogo" the neck.

As far as the Esquire body I'll have lying around: it will get a Brent pickup configuration (it's trans white/tortoise guard so it'd make a good looking "nashvilly" guitar).

Let me know if you know where I can get a body.

Warmoth can do the binding, and the silver flake finish, in poly.

Wow!

Look at how the finish has "sunk" on the top of that bad boy.

Sunken Finish

If you are going to do it, I think you should really go for gold with the checkerboard binding. After all, it is easy to spend somebody else's money. :D

The first one I did was plain silver w/no binding (but it does have flames!) and I really wasn't happy until I did the recent gold one with the checkerboard. Didn't do my research until too late and found out that Buck's has the checks on the BACK as well...now I'm thinking about doing another...to get it right.

Hacienda Brothers

Last sunday I went to a gig of the Hacienda Brothers (on their European tour). Dave Gonzalez played a gold sparkle tele exactly the same as Don Rich's. Dave is also frontman of the Paladins. Dave told the audience that his tele was one of four built for Buck Owens. I wonder if that's correct. Anyone?

cheers
Erik

Dave's Tele

He's got a custom shop Tele that was designed after Buck's/Don's. He has a 62 RI neck on it. Here's a pic I took of it and one cropped a little bit better:

I really like the Hacienda Brothers live. I didn't care for their CD, but live, they're great!

Here's one of Buck's from the Crystal Palace. He has these rotated every now and then. You'll notice in the pics above that the Tele in the pics from NAMM have the checkerboard with matching headstock. On this one, it's gold sparkle, black binding, plain headstock:
This may be the one Don Rich is playing on Hee Haw in Terry's clips...

Here's Buck playing a silver sparkle:

Here's Don playing a silver sparkle with Buck's laying on the amp:
They're wearing their Beatle's wigs! I can't tell if Buck's has a painted headstock or not on this one.

Great shot of Don:

Here's Jerry Brightman playing Don's Sparkle:

Zac - I'm sure Buck would never say he gave anything away! Anyways, Marty's had this Tele in his collection for a long time. He took it to the Fender Custom Shop when he took Clarence there and they made a few CS copies of Don's Tele:

I can't ever get enough Buck & Don stuff!
