Identify (or at least enjoy) this Danny Gatton song ...
Over at DannyGatton.com there's some great audio and video to check out. Here's the link
Here comes my question: There's an MP3 of the "Linus and Lucy Medley" which is a lot of fun and sounds, of course, like the Charlie Brown/Peanuts theme. Further down the page, there's a "Linus and Lucy" video from a TV taping which sounds NOTHING like the other tune, it's a gorgeous slow tune with incredible tone. I think this must be a mistake. Can anyone name the slow tune (or state with confidence that it is really related to the other mp3)? I'd like to buy whatever CD it came from. thanks, spencer |

The GENIUS of Danny Gatton

Anyway, thanks for bringing it up. It's a GREAT clip, and I'd highly recommend it to any guitarist who doesn't "get" Danny Gatton. :-) As I said, it's nice to see some video that showcases another facet of his playing – although truthfully, he had SO much depth as a musician that you often got the feeling after watching him play for several hours that you had STILL just scratched the surface of his amazing abilities. =:-O (Not that I'm a FAN, or anything... Hee.) ;-) CS

That clip is super inspiring and was one of the major motivations for me trying out my Tele with my three piece jazz group, where I never thought it would fit - and it may now never leave. I went back to it the other day thinking I should learn the tune and decided the title might not be right! |

Seriously, for any artist you can name, there will always be both fans AND folks who don't particularly care for them. Which is absolutely FINE, and as it should be, IMO. If we all liked the exact same stuff, it would be a very boring world indeed, right? ;-) CS

Hearing Danny Gatton about fifteen years ago definitely turned my world upside down and continues to inspire me to this day. In interviews, Gatton would often cite Breau as a primary inspiration and when you hear Breau's playing, you can understand why.
Recently, my local community radio station did a two-hour all-Breau show and it was just fantastic, featuring the recently rereleased Swingin' On A Seven String album in its entirety. (Remember when radio stations would play whole albums?) It's all classic country tunes, done Breau-style with lotsa typically jaw-dropping Buddy Emmons pedal steel. Strongly recommended purchase. |

1st, thanx for posting that...it's been a while since i visited the Gatton website and enjoyed the clips....
i, for one always admired Gatton's tone and touch....that he was able to get such a broad range of tones from a Tele plugged straight into an amp was a major aspect of his appeal to me.... i'm listening to "Relentless" as i type this....Kindred Spirits is up......oh yeah......gotta go now |

no no no, how could you forget ? it's all in the COLOR!!! Everyone KNOWS that the blue ones "twang" better than the green ones, and the white towels are best employed only for jazz......machine or line drying makes no difference i.m.h.o. *purely tongue in cheeky good natured good humor there guys, no flames because of your preference for purple towels, please* |

I had known about Danny for years before I ever heard my first Les Paul record, and as soon as I heard it, the connection just washed over me in waves it was so obvious, I remember I started laughing out loud when I 'discovered' Danny's primary source, because I wasn't looking for it, I had just bought a Les Paul record because guitar players are supposed to know about all the old schoolers, y' know? And BLAM, all I heard was 'Gatton' styled ( |

Not that that's a complete answer, or that I (or anyone) needs to make excuses... but we all have bad days, and shows we'd just as soon forget... I think that was one of Danny's 'wish I could do-it-over' shows... |

[\quote]I can't cite the source, but remember reading somewhere that Danny was REAL mad about that American Music Workshop show. The story as I remember it is that he was told to just bring his guitar, they'd have an amp for him, which he was a little leery of. I think I remember that a previous show went long, or for some reason he had very limited time for rehearsal, and he was never able to satisfactorily dial-in a sound he liked on the amp. He said he played badly because of it, and suspected sabotage from someone - promoters, labels, etc - that he didn't 'play the game' with.

I was very impressed the clip that was posted in this thread & need to check out more. I can definately see Les Paul in alot of Danny's playing.........no doubt he listened to him alot |
