I tend to favor the pearloid guards. Bit my favorite on the sunbursts or certain solid colors is the anodized gold. I have one on my black CS Classic Player Strat and one on my CE Sunburst Tele. I'll probably be installing one on my yet to arrive Nashville Deluxe Tele. It sould look sweet on a red Tele.

I'm partial to the hybrid pickguards from Warmoth. As far as color, I like the aged look of celluloid vintage pears, mint green & vintage cream. I also like some styles of tortise shell. It has to be the right one though or I think they look cheesy. Of course, I'm also happy with a simple, single ply white one.

I've made a few templates from the hybrid and found a stew mac clear hybrid template ( different than Warmoths ) on ebay for $5 a few years ago. I'm always searching for different types and styles of material to cut my own.

Depends on the color of the guitar for me. With my blue Tele, I thought the white pearloid would look the best.

Me too. I own a sign & graphics shop so I'm quite often found cutting new guards out of Traffolite (3 ply laminate like normal guards). Nice thing is, as Traffolite is an engraving laminate you can do fancy engraving in it too! (although that's not my scene - I do it for others, along with custom-shaped guards etc.).

We also use a single ply white upvc material, which makes excellent guards (I spend hours trying different methods of "ageing" it to give it that vintage look).

With the improvements in digital printing, we can now print some fantastic pics/designs and bond them onto the guards (e.g. I have one tele guard that looks like it is made of Kevlar, another of aluminium checker plate, but they are both as smooth as a babies b*m). My son's Strat has a guard with a pic of Kurt Cobain and the text "Nirvana" - it looks so cool. We overlaminated it with clear vinyl first to protect it, and - after 3 years of continuous heavy strumming and abuse - it looks as good as the day we fitted it. I'll post up a pic next time I've got my camera to hand.

Black on burst is nice, but my favorite is the old classic mintgreen on burst. Mintgreen on black is nice too.

White Mother of Bowling Ball on my CAR 62 RI, stock white on the Sunburst Esquire. I'm thinking of going with a matte silver pickguard on the Esquire.

From White to Black

I just started spray painting my white plastic guard black. Don't have the cash for a new guard so I want the punk rout and am spraying with that plastic bonding paint. The can says it will bond on a molecular level with the plastic. Could be crappy, could look cool.
I have the sunburst finish and the black looks much better than the white IMHO

Apologies for the Str*t, but!

I mentioned earlier in the thread about my son's Strat with his custom made pickguard which we produced for him in our Sign Shop.

This is a digital print, overlaminated it with clear vinyl, and bonded onto the guard. As you can see, it has a carefully positioned pic of Kurt Cobain and the text "Nirvana". 3 years of continuous heavy strumming and abuse later, it still looks as good as the day we fitted it.

....and here's the 'Kevlar' finish Tele guard......

Found this pic at last. This is the 'Kevlar' finish.

Again, digitally printed, then overlaminated in clear, then bonded to a white pickguard. We were just playing with this idea - ANY style of finish can be achieved.

The possibilities are endless!
