Buddy Guy on Saturday night

Was playing a 72 era Telecaster with humbuckers through a Tweed Twin and or a Fender SF. The only effect he used was his own signature line of Wah pedal. The man is so good it almost made me cry. The sounds and feeling he can pull from that simple setup are simply amazing....He puts on one He** of a show.

Hmm, I wonder if he used the Tele on his new CD. Has anyone heard the CD yet?

I just picked up the new CD and he's holding that guitar on the cover - has a 70's style Strat neck (or was that headstock a stock item on 72 Teles?). From the sound of it, he's playing it a lot on the CD, which is a great change-of-pace for him. I really like the stuff I've heard so far (although as much as I've enjoyed Carlos Santana since I was 12, his playing is out of place on this CD, and sounds pretty much like most of his lead work on his last couple of releases). I love to hear Buddy cover non-traditional standards, so this disc is a treat for me.

In the early 80's I saw him play in a little dive bar in East Lansing, Michigan (Rick's American Cafe) and he made my jaw drop. Unbelievably great live player.

    Funny Buddy story

I saw Buddy Guy for the 1st time back in the mid 80's. He was playing Night Stage in Cambridge, Ma. There were two shows, I had tickets for the early show.

I was absolutely STUNNED and ELATED at how good Buddy was!! Fabulous show, but all through the set he was drinking large quantities of a brown liquid out of a snifter. He drank so much I kept thinking "how can someone drink like that and still play like THAT?". I just had to stick around for the 2nd set, which I did.

Buddy comes out still killing on the 2nd set...AWESOME. Then about half way through the set he jumps off the stage and starts milling through the crowd. I figured it was some "bluesman showmanship". It turns out that he worked his way through the crowd, out the front door and NEVER CAME BACK!! Junior Wells finished the night alone with the band.

    Then it hit me...

Q: "How does someone drink like that and still play like THAT?"

A: "Do it as long as you can then leave!"!!

That show is still a very fond memory. Buddy is indeed a living legend and an OUTRAGEOUS guitar player.

Check out Buddy's footage in the Festival Express film...VICIOUS!!!

    The Best

IMHO, blues guitar doesn't get any better than Buddy Guy. I've seen him live several times, both outdoors and in a club. He can out-play all of the guitar gods, with room to spare. Occasionally, he goes way over the top and out of control, and occasionally he comes out in a bad mood and his performance suffers, but the man is pure blues guitar. He's entitled to be a bit pissed over all the white boys that tried to copy him and had greater commercial success.

If you ever want to take a course on how to build a guitar solo, layer after layer, give a listen to "Remembering Stevie" on Buddy's "Damn Right I Have the Blues" cd.

Are you sure he hadn't fallen out with the band or something?

Always possible I guess. It was certainly just my assumption that maximum density had been reached.

All appeared well between band members so to me it was simple math: 1 + 1 = 2

Don't get me wrong though, the show was GREAT!! I'm just glad I caught the early show too.

And....a geat early record of his, now a cd, is A Man & The Blues.
The first 5 notes on the very first cut will hook you for good. A chilling Strat tone by a Blues master.

A friend and I wandered into a club in DC in around 1979 because we heard FIERCE blues coming out.
We were very confused because the place was completely empty. It was about 1:30, I guess, because I think DC closed at 2:00 in those days.
Anyway...we sat down, ordered a beer and listened.
When the waiter brought the beers, I asked, "Who is that, anyway?!?!" He said, "That's Buddy Guy."
    Holy $hit!!
He played Stormy Monday and literally made me cry. When he was done with the song, there was silence in the room, and he said something like, "You liked that one, did you, son?" "I sure did, sir. Could you play just one more?" "OK, but then we've got to go. It's getting late."
I'm sure it was a thoroughly depressing night for Buddy and the band, but I'll never forget my private concert!
