"Unknown" Telecaster Greats
There has always been great players out there who are are not well known internationally and often even Nationally...You only have to look at the Roy Buchanan/Danny Gatton stories to see that they were always seen as something special, but for various reasons, obscure musical styles and lack of drive etc, it took huge campaigns by musical peers and Journalists to get them their just recognition...I guess that this has been done before in this forum, but I don't recall seeing it, so I am wondering who you guys might be able to turn us onto. Who is a great Telecaster Picker who has got under the radar? Maybe if you put up a name you might let us know what to check out work wise from him/her...I personally have always dug the idea of getting something great to listen to that is a little "obscure" and of course it might help their CD sales, especially in this era of "Independent" recording artists...I personally reckon that the American fraternity should have a lookout for the Australian Telepicker, Stuart French, a lot of you will know of him already from when he was over there with his band "The Feral Swing Kats" a few years ago (Michel Rose on Pedal Steel). So lets hear it guys, Who is out there that we all need to know about?

Teddy Morgan (of Teddy Morgan and the Pistolas). The last time I saw him he was admitted hungover and put on a less than stellar show. But the first time he completely rocked and blew me away (and hopfully this coming week when I see him again, he'll do much better.)
When I saw him the first time he was playing a standard tele through a Hot Rod series amp and last time it was an Esquire through a tweed reissue.

Hope the show is a good one, tell him to get back up here to The Beachland Ballroom again. I'd love to play with him again. Jake

Preacher Zeb of the Wailin' Elroys. They're about my favorite local band. Zeb does some crazy Luther-ish picking on their first album (haven't heard the other one). Check 'em out at www.wailinelroys.com and check out the place Teddy's playing at www.courtstreetgrill.com

two of my favorites:
David Kilgour of The Clean (he also has solo albums). Tobin Sprout of Guided By Voices (solo albums, too). Both are not traditional Tele twangers by any means. They are, however truly talented rock singer/songwriters. Their tone is very Tele-dependant and they play great catchy rhythm-based songs with some accented lead parts. If you want to support some independent types and you like that kind of thing, check em out! |

Actually, we did have a similar thread almost exactly a year ago:
http://tdpri.com/viewtopic.php?t=24386 But there are always new players coming up and more unknown greats lurking out there... ;-) CS

Ummm...
Drak
The most famous Johnny Kidd records had various players on. Early stuff ('58-'62) had the lead played by Alan Caddy, with Joe Moretti guesting on Shakin' all over. I'm pretty sure neither was a Tele player. Telemeister Mick Green joined in '62 and was ripping it up with the reformed Pirates through the '70s and on and off until recently (he had a near fatal heart attack on stage with Brian Ferry in New Zealand). Now, he's an unsung Tele hero. Mainly unsung that is. Sorry if I'm being an anorak. Check this for loads of info: Ahoy there! Dave

Jim Fish. Most recently, Jim played with the Byron Berline Band. http://www.doublestop.com He did more acoustic flatpicking than Tele playing on their albums, but there are some wonderful Tele moments. He's in the style of Clarence White, James Burton and even a little Albert Lee.

I wish to humbly add Prince Tomopato to the list.
As good it gets for the DC Tele sound. Not ~strictly~ Tele, but plays a Tele a lot, enough to be known as an unknown Tele-ist. Did that just not make sense? :P And Pete Kennedy! Horray for the Unknown DC Telecaster contingent! I've seen Kennedy stroll atop plenty of bar tables whippin' his Tele around like a switchblade. Never seen Principato mount a bar table in all the times I've seen him, but I'd bet he's owned his fair share of 'em. I might even go out on a cliff and say I've seen more Tele players walkin' bar tables than any other! :D |

Well.....Thanks for that, I was hoping I would have a bunch of CD's to track down, with a bunch of pickers to get to know that I had never heard of......I guess things are a bit slow out there in Televille!

Hey Terry oz, i'm a fan of the Ferals and i had a guitar lesson from Stuart last year, he is a great player and a great bloke, i last saw them a month or so ago in Balmain and really enjoyed myself , some other guitarists you may like are Bruce Mathiske (check spelling) and Michael Fix both play generally acoustic but really well (i won't mention Tommy) but i think they all do an occasional Telecaster track. As far as overseas telecaster players go I highly recommend Steve Piticco from canada (check out his website) & Paul Chapman
of course as far as Australia is concerned Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland and Albert Lee need somewhat of an introduction - although i've seen Albert around 5 times (here) now but the last time was around 1994.... apart from those guys Denniz Tek and Buck Dharma are my rock favourites, cheers steve. |

Arty McGlynn does some impressive Celtic stuff on a tele with Patrick Street and Four Men & a Dog.

Will Sargeant of Echo and the Bunnymen has always been an inventive tele player. Not in the traditional county/r n'b sense, but more of the eclectic, non-conventional sense. A very underrated player for sure.

There's a guy named Ty Tyler who plays for Chris Knight. Saw them live at WorkPlay in Birmingham, Alabama, and was completly blown away. Ty played a beat up early 60s Tele and was masterfull!!!
Here's the only pic of Ty that I could find on the net: ![]() That's him on the left side of the frame. Al |
