Wilko Johnson, ex Dr Feelgood. Great tele player. He is/was a big fan of Mick Green.

Eddie Hinton
Eddie Hinton. Muscle Shoals, couple of classic solo albums ('Very Extremely Dangerous', 'Letters From Mississippi'). All Tele.
Imagine Otis Redding singing for CCR. Very cool overlooked guitar music from Duane Allman's old friend and roommate. |

Won't any of our UK brethren...
... stand up for Glenn Tilbrook? Not only is he a fine Tele picker, but he's also been a terrific tunesmith and lead singer for over thirty years. On this side of the pond, there's Jon Herington with Steely Dan, who played an old Tele on at least half the tunes they did on the last tour.

There are so many...
I know so many great local players who just rip on a world class level with a tele and without...just in my own neck of the woods we got Bruce Bartlett, Johnny A, Sal Baglio, Greg Tower, Bob Davis, Bobby Keyes, Jim Scopa, Scott "The Cat" Anderson ...I have played with all of em on gigs and they can all just make you go wow , how did he think of that, I never played with Scopa who I recently saw on a gig with his band and he was playing some great stuff with a 54 tele and a 60 Tweed Deluxe ..there are so many talented pickers out there and man these guys can all just rip...as far as somebody just knocking me out like Danny and Roy did ...I dunno , Scott Anderson impresses me as well as all the favorites on this page...I would have to say one of my favorite compilations of great pickin is that Nashville Guitars CD and the live TwangBangers CD..Jim Campilongos CD,,,Redds CD, Prince's Musicology, man there is so much great stuff out there..how can you choose just one , its impossible..Here is something from way back, the guitar player for the Real Kids, they had some great rocking tele sounds.....

Few MD/DC Favorites
I have to agree on Dave Chappell. It doesn't get much better. If you want to check out his playing, here is a link to the Rhodes Tavern Troubadours' "On the Red Line."
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/rttroubadours But my favorite DC area telecaster player is Chick Hall, Jr. To hear his playing, you'll have to visit the Surf Club in Bladensburg, MD (there are some sound clips at the link below). http://www.chickhallssurfclub.com/ I recommend this experience to anyone who can make the trip. It is one of the last true honky tonks on a strip of road that was once a telecaster holy land. Although he doesn't play at the Surf Club regularly anymore, you might just get lucky and see another local great, Randy Leith. In terms of charisma and generosity, there's no topping Randy.

Danny Weis of "Rhinoceros" fame - listen to his obligato
on David Ackles' "Road To Cairo" - just heartbreaking ! It's fair to state though, that at this stage, he had 3 Strat pups installed in his early '50s blond Tele ! (It was guitar wizzard Ted Greene who was responsible for this alteration.) OOps - sorry guys, I'm getting a bit old ! |

Robyn Hitchcock
You may know him "only" as great neo-psychedelic/folk pop songwriter with a nasal voice, but his guitar playing is quite good too, particularly considering that he's singing at the same time. When he goes electric, it's a Tele. His interlocking parts with Kimberly Rew in the Soft Boys are up there with Verlaine/Lloyd (Televison) and Partridge/Gregory (XTC) for textbook post-punk two-guitar examples.

...or Joe Messina?
If you've seen "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", you know who Joe Messina is. The footage of him ripping those crazy trumpet lines on the Soupy Sales show is killer. This DVD is great, BTW. Until I saw it, the only Motown musician I knew of was James Jamerson.

Big Guitars From Memphis - another vote
John Ivan, heck of a nice guy. Humble to a fault.
For trivia's sake, he was also the lead guitar player in one of power pop's seminal bands, "Off Broadway"

It really depends on your definition of "unknown", but I think a mention of Big Al Anderson and Ted Greene is in order.
