Hmmmm...
I don't know if it's Waylon's, but it does have several of the right things to look for.
This one has a Scrugg's Banjo tuner on it like Waylon used. Some people just put a regular banjo tuner on them and that is incorrect. The Scrugg's has 2 set stops, ie from E to D. EMG's. Waylon started using these in the lat 80's in his Telecasters. Waylon also favored the 6 saddle bridge. He started (long before Danny Gatton) to cut down the lips on the bridge. Actually Waylon went a step further and cut them down on both sides all the way back to the saddles. The sticker on the back of the headstock is a Custom Shop sticker. Waylon had a couple of his necks copied by the CS. Is this one of them? I dunno! This isn't the neck that comes on the Fender CS Waylon tribute Tele. It has Waylon's sig on the front and pearloid tuners on it. This looks like a 52 RI neck. There's several people around the US who can/have made the leather cover. I know this to be true! How many leather Tele's did Waylon have? Good question. At my count there's at least 7 to 10 of them. Some of them are very easy to spot because the leather pattern is different. This one here is the pattern that most people have seen Waylon used. Is this one Waylon's? I don't know. They copied it right if it isn't. Waylon's guitars went to Jessie and Shooter and it's safe to say that they're not letting those get away. EITHER WAY, it's a bad ass guitar and I love it! Very cool! It'd be neat to hear more history about it 'cause you know Fuzz, we love ol' Waylon 'round these parts! Johnny Isaacs I posted this awhile ago: http://www.tdpri.com/viewtopic.php?t...ghlight=waylon

I also know that Reggie still has one that Waylon gave hm about 2 or 3 years before he died....It is the one that you see Waytlon with that has a black pickguard....
Bill Hullett P.S. at the time of Waylons death his #1 tele that had that covering , can be identified from a new white hand tooled leather pickguard too that my son Clay gave to Waylon and Waylon had him put it on the Tele.... |

I forwarded those pictures to Fuzzy seeking his wise and sage input. The shop is located North of Seattle and the cabinet that has the tele also has two beautiful acoustic guitars proported to be owned by Johnny Cash (given to him by Marty Stewart) and Willie Nelson respectively. I believe both were Martins, if I recall. One of the owners of the shop, Ira, has a considerable amount of documentation surrounding the tele including what proports to be a signed note from Waylon authenticating the piece. I am up in the area on business and will see how much additional information (and pics) I can get. They have a website
http://www.mannamusic.com/ but I can't seem to find any references to the tele. Best part of my week was walking in and seeing that guitar. I guess I've become tele-afflicted, huh?

Manna is my "local" store- very cool place. Ira has a HUGE collection of guitars. Did you look up on the walls? Everything up there is for display only and is only a small part of his stuff, as is the Waylon Tele pictured above. Once a year or so, they rotate new guitars in and create new displays. IIRC, this one is actually one of Waylon's, but I'll go there one day this week and re-read the documents in the case. I've got Ira's phone number here someplace, maybe I should give him a call? I'll tell you one thing for sure, he really loves Teles and should be hanging around here with us- I tried to convince him once, but not sure if he ever did?

Hey teletubby,
Thanks for taking the pictures and posting them for us, but could you possibly shrink them down abit? Pictures more than 450 pixels wide seem to give this site a hard time and take ages to download...especially for those of us with slow dial-up connections. I think you can shrink/compress pictures in situ at the photobucket site. |
