Cool Tele -> Marshall tones last night
was at rehearsal last night and brought my trusty tele along. With my band for live I usually use my Hummer guitars (SG or LP) and keep the Tele for recording.
my amp rig is 2 Marsshall 1/2 stacks. split stereo. JMP 2204 50watter set to a bright, classic AC/DC type of crunch. JCM800 2205 with the highs cut, bass and mids boosted. I then use a Hot Cake OD to clean boost everything. by mistake i had my tone knob rolled way down almost all the way. with the bridge pickup it sounded amazing! sorta Queens of the Stone Age like. I fiddled with it and got a nice sweet balance. Tone was maybe 1/4 way up in the end and rocked it all night long. sounded great. of course on a couple tunes i rolled the tone back up to about 3/4 and it too sounded great. nice low end rumble of the low strings that only a tele can do and very articulate mids and treble when punching out chords. Solos were defined and singing.

Rolling the tone off, or using the "bassy" setting on an Esquire or pre-1967 Telecaster, is really useful if you've got a fizzy sounding '60s 1-transistor fuzz box.
Another fun trick, if you've got an Esquire or a Tele with the old wiring scheme, is to use that sound but make occasional stabs with the switch to get high-pitched squeals. |

Right on Hal, I do the same thing with my 72 Custom RI(and I'm a huge QOTSA fan). I found that the best way to get that throaty, midrangey, punchy tone is to roll the tone all the way off on the bridge. It's nice with the Custom because of the separate tone controls (I like the humbucker all the way "on"). That trick doesn't sound so great when playing clean, but with fuzz it sounds awesome. It's kinda become a habit because I do it with my strat and my les paul too. Bridge pickup+ heavy distortion=time to roll the tone off.

Well from what I read, Josh Homme solely used the neck pickup of his Ovation on the first couple of albums of QOTSA and Kyuss.
So when the band started recording "Songs for the deaf" and he wanted to try something different, he found that the lack of use has rusted the pickup switch solid and he couldn't select the bridge pickup.

I'm sure Hal makes it sound good.....
...but on the bridge pickup of my Les Paul, I want the tone control almost max'd out (to 10). Only way it sounds right to me!
Maybe it's my playing! Rock on! -Eric

yeah i've known Homme used the neck pup solely. and he doesn;t use any Marshalls either. hates them. he uses all sorts of oddball amps, but most spcifically an old Ampeg of sorts. gets great tones. plus he's tuned down 2 steps i think.
Yeah I am NOT into the whole "Woman tone" thing myself. and for my Les Paul, i prefer to keep the tone knob on 10 or close to it. But it sure did sound cool to roll of the tone on that Tele bridge pup. Completely different feel. its good to experiment seometimes.

Marshall/Ampeg Setup
I run my Teles (and all of my guitars) through two 4x12 half stacks. One is a Marshall 50W, the other is an Ampeg VL-502 50W. I play through both of these at the same time, and use the footswitches (mounted on my pedalboard) for both to go from clean to overdrive on both amps, as needed. The Marshall/Ampeg combination is really awesome, kinda Boogie-like in a way, but better. It's a way cool sounding live/recording rig!
