'57 Esquire - refinished/restored
Saturday, a friend came by and showed me an original '57 Esquire that he is selling for another friend. It is far from original though.
One of the previous owners butchered the guitar. He sanded the finish off and in some areas, took too much wood off. The pots are not original but maybe the pups are. The pickguard is not original. So, what does this guitar have? The current owner is a guitar technician at a local repair shop. He is expanding his skills at restoration and refinishing. This guitar looks awesome, though I did not see it before he did the work. He has built up the wood in a way that I could not see the damage at all. He refinished it in a Mary Kaye near translucent white wash. Some how, he was able to get the nitro to check real nicely and consistantly. The back of the guitar has chips in the finish that would ressemble belt-buckle rash (but not exactly right). The neck has an aged tint to it. Also, the feel of the neck is wonderful. From a distance, this guitar looks authentic except for the new white pickguard. Up close, you can see the care that he put into the restoration. However, as a purist, it is certainly a disappointment that it has gone through these transformations. But realizing that this guitar was salvaged from a mess, it is now a very attractive an functional guitar. I wished I had taken a picture of it. I got to play it unplugged out by his car, as he showed it to me as he was leaving. He said that he is asking $2800 but is interested in offers. This sounds sort of like a Garage Sale item with that last sentence. But I am not selling the guitar. I'm just passing on some interesting information on a historical guitar. Since I don't have the guitar in possesion, I cannot answer many questions about it. But I can put you in touch with the owner or the broker to get more details. |
