'72 Tele Custom and Deluxe Re-issues
Hi! This is my first post here, so I thought a little background would be in order. I have used Telecasters heavily since getting my first one, a natural finish 1972 model in 1979 for $200! Sadly, I don't have that one any more, but I do have five Teles (as well as Strats, Epiphone Dots and my main axe, a 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong See Through). My main Tele is my 2000 '72 Tele Custom Re-issue. I always wanted one of these, as my fave guitarist, Keith Richards, played one exclusively during the late '70s/early '80s. I really dig mine a lot. I know it's not a vintage guitar, or even made in the US, but it Rocks! I recently picked up a Squier Telecaster Custom Re-issue as a back-up. I have to say this is a pretty cool guitar itself for just over $200! Anyway, I do love these types of Teles. The '72 Telecaster Deluxe Re-issue has also caught my eye, as well. I do like humbuckers on a Tele! Just for the record, I do have Fender Standard Teles, as well, for the classic Tele sound. I also am not snobby about using Squiers, either. I know they're not as great as their Fender relatives, but they are well-made and sound good. I owned a black '84 Squier Tele in the '80s and it was great, as is my new one. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and my preferences. I think this is a great forum!

Hi Heather.. I had to chime in because we have very similar guitars. I've got a '76 Custom and a '72 Custom reissue. Is your '72 MIJ or MIM? I like the Deluxe a lot too. If I had the money, I'd get one. The bridge humbucker really has that growl, and it's really comfy with the cutaway.

And another welcome to you, Heather. I picked up a '73 Telecaster Custom (with replaced neck) a few weeks ago, thanks to tip here from Moonshiner. It really is a great guitar, and I've been playing it quite a bit. Kinda heavy, but hey, I spend most of my gigging time with a heavier bass...

cuckers and bustoms
Hey Heather,
I play a 72 Custom RI as well. I've got the sunburst w/rosewood neck. I play hard rock so I always need at least one humbucker. I also had a 99 Fat Tele that was my favorite until some creep stole it. After having this Custom for a while, I'm realizing one thing I don't like about it. It's got the small vintage frets on it. I noticed that the Deluxe RI has the medium jumbos on it, so maybe I'll look into one of those. I bend a lot and I can't quite "dig in" like I need to with the small frets. I certainly can't complain about the tone this thing puts out though. Despite the frets, it's still my #1. Welcome to the forum. There is someone here who knows the answer to any question you could ever think of. |

Have any Custom/Deluxe fans ever wished they made them in red and with a smaller pickguard.. think Les Paul Special or early SG? If I ever have someone make me a guitar, it would be a hybrid of a Tele Custom and LP Special.

There's a great website devoted to the 72 Fender Custom. Here's the link:
http://lidbjork.homelinux.org/72cc/ They are like a club devoted to this guitar. They even have somewhat of a forum. |

In my opinion, the '72 Tele Custom and Tele Deluxe and re-issues are the best Telecasters Fender has ever made. That's a strong thing to say, but I really mean it. I dig my other Teles (including my Squier Tele Custom), but the Custom and the Deluxe are sooooo cool. I mean, Keith Richards used one for over a decade, and he's certainly a Tele king! I have played and owned Teles for over 25 years, and my '72 Custom RI is my all-time fave! I think the Deluxe is way cool, as well. I owned a Pink Paisley reissue for a few years back in the late '80s/early '90s, and I enjoyed it, but my Custom is so much better. And I don't think one needs to pay over $1,000 for a great guitar. Teles were originally conceived as workhorse instruments, tools if you will. A new Tele can be every bit as good as an old one, regardless of where it's made. I have owned American and foreign-made guitars for decades, and it's like anything else, there's good and bad made everywhere. I also think Leo Fender had the player in mind, really wanted these instuments to be affordable. The most I've ever paid for a guitar is $1,000 for my 1970 Ampeg Dan Armstrong See Through. This was in 1991, years before the re-issues were made in 1998-2001. All of my other guitars: Fenders, Squiers, Epiphones, Ovations, etc. were all under $1,000. And they are all great! OK, I got a little off the point, which is my fave is the '72 Tele Custom original/re-issue. A true Rock 'n Roll machine!
8) Peace, Heather |
