Just played the Telecaster Deluxe!!!

I just got back from the local Guitar Center where I played a real telecaster for the first time. WOW! I have got to have one. My favorite was the Telecaster Deluxe: Black, two humbuckers, maple neck with Strat like headstock, it was unbelievable. How do you folks feel about this guitar?

I thought the headstock....

....was goofy when I first got it, but grew to love it. If I get enough money for another guitar I'm in the process of selling, I may go out and buy another. I really liked that guitar.

The one I owned was pretty heavy, but I didn't mind; the neck fit tight as a glove in the pocket of the body, I really liked that. The neck felt awesome, and I loved the large frets. Those buckers are pretty raunchy sounding (that's a good thing).

Here's a pic of the one I had, along with a cool "custom-painted" MIM Stnd Tele I had:

The one I tried was the deadest sounding POS I've ever played. Totally devoid of all twang. It reminded me of all the bad 70's Fenders I've played.

What's wrong with the big head?

My '68 Strat has that big headstock and it works pretty good....

i bought a new tele deluxe reissue and i like it a lot...i would however, make sure you play it and find a good one before you buy it, i played two others before i got the one that i did, the others just felt like theyd fall apart or something.

what i like most about it is how familiar it feels, i just the feel of fenders and the tele deluxe offers something im comfortable with along with some differant sounds...

Cool guitar.

I prefer the tone of the original Wide-Range humbuckers with CuNiFe magnets better than the reissues with AlNiCo magnets.

But for another $300 or so, you could get some original pickups to drop in.

I recently played a Squier version of one of those and have had it on my mind ever since. I A/B'd it with the $600 model and actually liked the Squier better! I want to make it a special day when I return to grab that.

I don't know if I am just crazy, but the RI's I have tried feel nothing like the originals thing to me. My buddy has an original that I LOVE. The necks on the new ones feel nothing like it though. And they definitely don't sound the same to my ears. I still like how they look though.

My complaint is that all new guitars seem like they are strung with super light strings. I've been using heavier and heavier strings over the years, and these super slinky 009's and even 008's feel lousy to me.

I tired one of the Deluxe RI's and it sounded tinny and I blame those strings.

Put some manly strings on them and let's hear what they really sound like!!

I usually use 11s. I was playing "Sunshine of Your Love", you know, the Cream song, and this big guy comes up behind me and goes, "Where's the bass, man? I'll back you up." That was kinda cool. Man, that guitar has been on my mind ever since yesterday. I've figured that I can have all the money by Thanksgiving. I'll try out the other teles again when I go back, just to be sure, see what I'd be missing. But I plan on making my parts tele as close to the standard twang as I can so that's why I'd go for the humbuckers.

I have a '72 Telecaster Custom Re-issue and a Squier Telecaster Custom, which is very similar to the Deluxe. The Deluxe is great, it's on my "wish list". My '72 Re-issue is my fave Tele, it's great! I really wanted one, as Keith Richards played one exclusively during the late '70s/early '80s. I picked mine up in 2002 when Mars Music went out of business for a really great price. Don't forget to try out a Tele Custom Re-issue when you're trying out those Teles!

The Squire Custom II mentioned above is a guitar I love. It's definitely one of the best values out there. I tried 2 of them at the local shop and the both looked and sounded great. The cost a fraction of any other Fender they carry as well (except other Squires).

My Squier Tele Custom is the original one, not the Custom II. I'm sure the Tele Custom II is a great guitar, but I am referring to the original Squier Tele Custom, the one with the chrome covered humbuckers, introduced in 9/2003.

The Deluxe is great.. don't even look for twang because that's not what it's for. I like that there's a Tele for every mood and style of music. Plug the Deluxe into a Mesa Boogie or Marshall combo and rock out!

I'm planning to get a Squire Tele Custom with the twin humbuckers, also. Unfortunately they don't carry Custom II's around here so I don't know what they're like. I'm infatuated by the Squire Custom, though!

It's definitely my next guitar! It's like it was designed just for me, taking the features of my beloved 68RI Strat and combining them with a Tele, then adding some humbuckers for variety. I tried a really nice one in my local store, but it wasn't black so I'm still looking (and saving).

I just don't like a Strat headstock on a Tele. To my eyes, that just looks wrong..... On a gig last weekend, there was a guy with a Tele Deluxe but that one had a *proper* Tele neck & headstock. Looked cool!

i gigged with a '76 for alomst 100 yrs in the 90's. cool guitar. Loved the tone. I had issues with the 3 bolt neck though not as stable as a 4 bolt for sure. Neck was OK, nothign great. Good rock guitar. not real twangy though. THat said, for a real hummer esperience, i prefer an SG or LP or for a slightly twangy 'bucker sound i'd rather have a Firebird or old 60's Epi Crestwood.

i think that you should be able to buy an original 1972-73 tele deluxe for what you would pay for a new r.i.. i guess around $500-750..?? but, if you wait too long, the vintage market will escallate the prices of the orginals. this was not a valued vintage guitar, why? i dont know. i have owned one for ten years and i have enjoyed it tremendously. i knew that it would become a sought after piece eventually, and i have seen a few guys playing one on t.v. so, hurry to find an original... the humbuckers are really fine. a little experimentation and you will dial in a sound that is 'yours'.

The Deluxe doesn't just have a Strat headstock............ it's got that big giant goofy looking CBS Strat headstock which now is only seen on Deluxes and Squier Strats.

The only redeeming quality I can think of with that headstock is that since it's so big, there should be enough wood there to cut it into a Tele headstock.

I love the way the headstock works with the pickguard. I've been thinking of getting it in the walnut finish. I'm not sure, though.
