Buck Owens Gold Sparklecaster Update

When we last visited this adventure, my Buck Owens Tribute Gold Sparklecaster had just been bound, scraped and was ready for the painter.

Well...

It just came back...

The odd non-sparkle region is a shadow. If a spotlight ever hits it directly, it could blind somebody.

Time to buy more parts I guess. Unless somebody talks me out of it, there will be an Adder at the neck and a Fralin in the bridge. w/b/w pickguard, and kluson style tuners.

Yes...that is yet another parts guitar in the background.

Very nice.

Holy cow!!!

That is such greatness!!

So, I've got to know. The binding on the backside around the neck pocket.....is the wood radiused or does the binding mate at sharp corners?

I like it!

Please tell us about the binding.

Very cool!

It's looking GREAT! Congrats! If I may, I recommend Callaham hardware!

Now we're all gonna have to get together!

And we'll invite this guy with his silver sparkle Tele too!

I slummed out and did not put the checkerboard around the back. The single black binding bent around the neck pocket just fine with the standard radius.

WR Chris - the checkerboard binding (actually, the way I am using it here it should be called purfling) came from Custom Inlay in Kaintucky. It is something that is used on banjos quite often - around the tops of guitars not so often.

There are more pictures in this old pre-paintshop thread.

Johnny, it would be a hoot to have a jam of Sparklecasters sometime - but I'm afraid I would be "found out" real quick.

Joe, now that mine is done - it is time to do some research!!

Does yours have the checkerboard around the back as well?

That is a gorgeous guitar.

Buck,

Yours looks like it's going to be just as sweet!

Yes, the binding on the back of the guitar is checkboard just like the front.

Binding!!!

That is one awesome guitar!!! I have to know exactly where to find that binding. Did you do it yourself, or have it done? My dream guit-fiddle is a tangerine orange sparkle tele with that binding (front & back) with b-bender, lollar charlie christian tele neck p/up, aged pearloid pickguard...and maybe a wood-burned "F" ala Gretsch. --oh no, now everyone will want one!!!

Awesome Buckocaster there :D . Yours is flashy too Johnny. Openeing lick to "Where Does the Good Times Go?" just whipped through my mind.

Not to get your post off on another angle, but I have a Q:
Bucko, I notice the Reranch cans in the background (ever notice how nobody misses anything in a posted pic ?). I've used a couple of colors of theirs: Fender Blonde and Gibson red, but I was wondering if you--or anyone else--had any experience with their neck amber. Either the amber dye aeresol or the tinted lacquer. I want to color a neck and just wondered if these were good alternatives to tracking down a sprayer, etc.

I did a search and found a bunch of stuff on the neck tint. Seems like a hot topic here recently. Still, feel free to chime in if you have something to add from your own experience though.

The neck amber....well...sucks! I've had bad experiences on two different maple board necks using the Reranch amber. The product is watery, runs too easy, and has a tendency to 'pull-away' from the frets on a maple board which leave you with a nicely tinted neck except for the white stripes followed by yellow buildup near the frets. It's also difficult to get an even tint and the depth of tint sneaks up on you too fast...it's too light, then you spray another coat and all of a sudden it's too dark!

Now, for the OTHER Reranch products...they are all fantastic!!!!! I've had EXCELLENT results using their tinted clear nitro to tint necks. It goes on even, dries fast, doesn't pull away from the frets, and it's easy to get the desired level of tint. The tinted clear is a GREAT alternative to rounding up a sprayer and you can easily get professional results with it.
