Australian TDPRI-ers?

Are there any Australian (esp. Canberra) TDPRI-ers out there? If so, can you recommend a good guitar teacher in Canberra? I am mainly interested in learning blues. Also, any good places to listen to live music in Canberra?

A couple of us over West...

I'm in Perth, simonc wil probably chip in soon too, Robin Nahum's up in Sydney.

Dunno nothin' about Canberra or its music scene - it has a reputation of being boring. But then again, its the only place in Australia where the "3 P's" are legalised... so I guess folks stay indoors in their spare time.

HERES SOMEONE FOR YOU

Try and locate Chris Webbe, of the band Sweaty Palms. I think he's from up around your area. Chris is a monster picker who just might be inclined to give a lesson ot two.
His band was pretty popluar in those parts...he is one of the guys involved with Summernets too. he's a sweetheart of a mate!
Ask around, you'll find him. Tell him G'Day" from JOhn Beland.

Pleased to meet you tjalla. I am from the other Perth (in Scotland) originally. I am going to ANU for three months during study leave from my university. I will definitely try to make it to Perth, WA, just to say I've been.

I know quite a few folks who spent time in Canberra. If you ask them, "What did you think of the city?", they all say "Boring". But if you ask them, "Did you have a good time, there?" they all say, "Yes, great." Maybe your theory can explain that one.

I can't help you.... But I lived a year in Gympie, QLD. Does that count?

That's sounds just about right! The "3 Ps" are not appropriate to be discussed here (or anywhere for that fact). But just think "Amsterdam" and "18+", and use your imagination.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT recommending this stuff! Its only what I hear... stick to looking for a guitar teacher while you're there :D

Agreed. I think my basic point is that despite its reputation, and even its appearance, everything I have heard suggests that a lot of (n.b.: good, clean) fun can be had in Canberra.

Actually, I do have a theory for that. I lived in Sydney for a couple of years many, many years ago. (How many? Well, let me put it this way: I played in one of the very first bands Renee Geyer ever sang with...) =:-O

And I did spend some time in Canberra. (I don't remember anything untoward being legal there at the time, btw...) And yes, it was boring, because there was nothing to do. But because there was so little to do, people threw parties. LOTS of parties. And I don't know about you, but I always had FUN at parties. ;-)

So I'd agree – it was boring. But I had a really good time there. (Well, what little I remember of it, anyway... hee.) – CS

Hi,

Just as well that I logged into the TDPRI today and saw your post. My wife and I have been back from Eastern Europe for just over a week and I haven't had the chance to do anything here except have a quick look.

Welcome to Canberra. I grew up in Sydney and moved to Canberra after graduating and lived there for over twenty years - coming back to Sydney in 1996. In short, it's a great place to live but I wouldn't want to visit there.

There was lots on. I was involved in the folk music scene and attended or played at the monthly bush dances at the Yarralumla Woolshed. All dances called and you meet lots of nice people. Contact Monaro Folk Music Society. They can also tell you about folk festivals.

Tilley's in Lyneham still seems to get the good acts. The ANU used to have good gigs in the Refectory. I saw Lene Lovich and The Pogues (Sean was too drunk to sing that night) there among others.

I'm not sure what playing standard you are at or what styles interest you. A guy who knows the ropes in Canberra is Dave.... um can't think of his surname but he has red hair (or used to) and plays jazz, bluegrass and blues on guitar and fiddle. Been around for years. If you inquire at one of the music stores or the National Folk Festival office, they can put you in touch.

Have you discovered ABC Radio National AM 846 - more specifically The Planet?

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/music/planet/

I hope that you enjoy your stay. Please feel free to PM if you need more info.

I just saw this thread, a bit late cottoning on.

Yeah Canberra....3 P's is all I have heard about it.Oh , & apparently there is a building there, Prime Minister shows up every now n then. The city was built because they couldnt decide between Sydney & Melbourne for a capital (at least thats what Ive been led to believe).Thats about all I know regarding Canberra.

Have a great time, cool to hear you are from Perth in Scotland too.
