Need a Capo???

What is a good capo that works well on a tele neck? I'm in a cover band with a female singer and she does most of her songs in the same key as the cd's. Thanks for any help.

I use...

Shubb capos (the "original brass" model").

They fit fine, and they've always worked well for me.

Check this link...

+1. Love the Shubb! I use them for all my guitars - electric, acoustic, 12-string, even mandolin.

The best capo I have ever used is the G7th. It works well and my Telecaster (medium jumbo frets) stays in tune when I use it. It has easy ajustable pressure, it looks cool, it's small and it doesn't compete with your fretting hand.

re: capo advice

i also use shubb capos on my teles and acoustics.
they work fine and are fast to bring into position and to be removed.
i only can recommend them, plus you can ajust the tension on the strings according to your string size !
take care everybody

I gave my shubb away to a friend in need. Since I had a Dunlop trigger and Keyser ( both of which I have recommended before ) I didn't feel I needed them. Boy, was I wrong!

I rarely use a capo on electric, but when I did want to use one for asong, the Dunlop and Keyser both put my tele out of tune. That never happened with the Shubb. Lesson learned!

+1 on the Shubb. Try the Shubb Cut Capo for some interesting tunings.

and I've been happy with my Glide Capo too.

Nah. Not really that hard. Both a G7th and a Victor will beat a Shubb.

It depends A LOT on your Tele.

Do you have a vintage reissue Telecaster? i.e. 7.25" radius neck?

Then the G7 is junk, the Gliders are junk, etc.

There's only ONE capo that suits the bill and that's the Shubb C4... which is radiused for vintage Fenders. Otherwise, you're going to get buzzing on the high or low E strings and anyone that tells you otherwise is lying!

All of the others buzz on vintage Teles. I have all of them... the C4 is the one to use....

+1 more for the Shubb. Use one several times a week. On electric, and acoustic. It's the way to go. I have victors too, and LOVE them for acoustic, although the Shubb is more convenient to use. For electric though, SHUBB SHUBB SHUBB SHUBB SHUBB SHUBB SHUBBBBBB. It's the best way to go.

i use one on the bass!

i play in a band where the guitar player wrote the basslines. he's left handed and learned to play on a regular guitar held upside down. *

some of his weird "upside down" basslines are impossible to play without a capo.

:D

*he has a lovely handmade mustang-alike which is left handed but strung upside-down (with the thin strings uppermost) it totally screws with my head.

Both the G7th and the Victor come in different sizes for different radii of necks. First, buy the appropriate size. Second, both are "slightly" reshapable by hand to come up with an exact fit for the neck you will be using it on.

Altho, no capo will work well everywhere on a compound radius neck.

P.S. Maybe it's because this a "reissue" board, but most other guitar forums are of the general opinion the Shubb was the best 10 years ago. But, that was before the G7th and Victor arrived.

I read an article in a big british guitar magazine where they compared a zillion different capos, and the G7 came out the clear winner. They loved it.

Well, I don't know what g7th is, so I'll go along with you there and agree that I'm a little ignorant. But "Before Victor arrived?" Maybe I'm more ignorant than I thought, because I've held onto my last two Victors for dear life. I've had them at least 15 years, and was under the impression that they didn't make them anymore. Are these the same Victors of old, back again? Do you have a link to where I might see one?

Jake

PS- If it makes a difference, I don't own a reissue, of ANYTHING.

True confessions: Buckocaster51 is a capo slut. I have a G7th and a Victor. I use them. But I usually use a Shubb.

It's great to have all of these good choices.

I spent some time in an unnamed Eastern European country when the WALL was still up. I am sure that if I had wanted to buy a capo there, the State would have offered ONE for sale...and it would have been out of stock.

What do Shubbs cost these days? $15-20? G7ths are on the order of $40 aren't they? Assuming that I have those numbers correct, that might play a factor in a person's decision.

FWIW

I've used Shubbs and there is certainly nothing wrong with them....But I do think that a Victor works a little better for me.....

Wrong wrong wrong about the G7th. I spoke on the phone to the guy who made it, Nick Campling, and he said they wouldn't work on a vintage radius properly and that there were no plans to offer them in a vintage radius in the future.

THAT is what research is.

Being a capo whore myself, I'll have to try the Victor- looks promising. Meanwhile, the Shubb is all I'll use on a vintage Fender radius.

The Glider is good for my acoustic gigs where I change positions quickly. Once you've tuned with the capo on, there's very little tweaking needed when changing positions. This is on my Gibson J-100- flatter radius so the Glider doesn't buzz.

I still say the best capo I ever used was the now-discontinued Sabine capo that clamped on the fret, not behind it- different feel but didn't stretch out the strings like other capos do... that was a sweet capo.

That WAS a great capo. I still have one but the rubber/plastic is all shot.

Of course I still have one of spring-loaded Hamiltons, and one or two of the screw type Hamiltons...like I said, I am a capo slut.

I've got 2 Kyser "quick change" and love both of them. I know they are not popular, but I have not had one problem with mine.

I like it most because it is so darn fast to put on/pull off/switch frets.

Just another worthless $0.02.

I have a couple of Keysers kicking around somewhere- the problem with them is the excessive pressure they exert wreaks havoc on the strings, putting bends in them...

I use a Paige, it's small and lets you control string pressure.
