OH NO! New Danny Gatton album

Tom Principato has just released a second volume of the Blazing Telecasters gig. This is the same night as the first Blazing Tele CD at Adam's Rib, recorded the same day as Danny's dad's funeral. The tunes are pretty good. There is a version of Harlem Nocturne that had source tape problems, but Tom felt it needed to be included.

Tom mentions in the liner notes that Danny is NOT playing his Tele that night, but rather the 1956 ES-350T that his dad bought him when he was 12. Are you kidding me??????? Sure sounds like a Tele with some drive to me! Further proof that the tone (and lack of feedback) is in the hands.

The disk is available at Amazon and Elderly (cheaper at Elderly, but no free shipping) http://www.elderly.com/recordings/it...ERHOUSE121.htm

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

FYI, it's also available as downloads via the iTunes store for near-instant gratification.

Didn't Tom also videotape that night? I know I have a video of the both of them playing around the Blazing Tele era and Danny definately was playing the tele. I had assumed it was the same night they recorded BT, but now I'll have to check......and also get the new CD! (I also wonder how Tom worked it out with Holly???)

If the video you're referring to is the one Tom released on DVD as "Blazing Telecasters"- that is professionally shot in a TV studio and is not the Adam's Rib gig that gave rise to the 2 CDs. Danny is playing a Tele with single blade Bardens in the TV studio.

I don't know how Tom worked it out with Holly, but the back of "Oh No" says "Released through arrangement with Holly Gatton." I can only presume money was involved.

I was wondering...

...when this would come to light. My good friend (and ex-bandmate) John Previti, who was the bassist for that performance, has chuckled for years about the "Blazing Telecasters" title of that recording. He's not into gear enough to know it was the ES-350, but has told me for years it was a Gibson archtop on that gig. What's even funnier was a review I read several years ago citing Danny's "trademark Telecaster tone..." on the recording!

I sure do want that belt buckle...

PS - I'm so thankful Tom is puttin' this stuff out...I'm so excited about it!

famous guitar

That ES-350 is allegedly the one Scotty Moore used on the early Elvis recordings. I recall reading a pretty convincing case in a Danny interview that it was indeed the same guitar (Scotty himself verified it too, I think).

'54 ES-295

Actually the guitar that Gatton mistakenly thought was Scotty's is an ES 295 (Florentine cutaway). I believe the guitar pictured is his '56 350.

Cheers, Paul

Yep, the one he thought was Scotty's was a '54 ES 295. Danny's had a bigsby, and Scotty's didn't have a bigsby... I can't believe he didn't notice that from pictures.

I don't believe it had the Bigsby when Danny bought it. It did however, have the wrong bridge and tailpiece back when Scotty was playing it. This fact did not escape Danny's attention, and he discussed it in an interview with 20th Century Guitar.
