Johnny Hiland in Maine....
Had a chance to catch Johnny Hiland doing a concert/clinic at a local music store, Pavlov's Music, in Augusta, Maine tonight...no charge..and I even won a guitar stand.......I saw him at the L/A Guitar Festival last year and wanted to see him again....I was just as impressed as last time....and more...
The guy can flat out play.....he did a nice mix of talking about his personal background and guitar influences and playing his PRS.....he had some local talent backing him up and was enough of the gentleman to let them take a couple of spots...did a little jaming on some country, blues, swing and rock numbers just showed how truely talented he really is......he ended with "Truth Hurts", dedicated to his Aunt.....and then did "Call Me the Breeze" with another local guitarist....again scarey. Had the opportunity to speak with his mother for a couple of minutes (need to remember to send her a copy of that video...bg) and meet his aunt.....just good ole Maine people....easy to see where he gets his good character from.....nothing like good family... Listening to Johnny talk about his playing and influences, which are too many and varied to list....just think Ricky Scaggs -> Eddie Van Halen, and how they have changed during the years, it was easy to understand his passion and love for the instrument.....no inflated ego here, just a guy that loves what he is doing and never stops willing to learn... When I met him at the L/A Festival, I found him to be friendly and unassuming....nothing has changed...but damn......watching him play, I don't know which hand to watch.....my hands hurt just thinking about it....bg.. If you haven't had the chance to see him perform live, you don't know what you are missing....DON'T turn down the opportunity....and buy his self titled CD (from Favored Nations label). Hope to catch up with him a little later when I'm in Nashville..later. cowboy
