Keith Urban in NJ

His 1st ever gig in the Garden State...Toms Riverfest.

He was great. Sang great, played great, band was great. He surprisingly only played his tele on 3 songs...he was favoring a goldtop LP and black Strat all night. If he's not careful, he'll be banned to the Bad Dog Cafe (non-tele) forum!

I was too far away to get a good look at his amps, but there were 2 that were unmistakable: a BadCat and a Vox AC30. He had 5 various amps/cabs, all stacked on top of each other (the Vox was sideways).

I highly recommend a KU show if you haven't seen one- he's not a run-of-the-mill, put on some too-tight jeans & a cowbay hat, turn on your ProTools & go stand there and sing, kind of performer. Very dynamic, very interactive with the crowd.

On the other hand- I don't recommend Toms Riverfest. Yikes. Held on a high school campus, no alcohol, and not a darn thing to do but stand in line to buy TICKETS, which you then stand in line to use to buy everything else there. Which is pretty much just carnival food. A joke, really. They pulled in some decent names tho- Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Maroon 5, Southside Johnny, Fuel, KU.

I was gonna go to that but i didn't know when he was going to be onstage and didn't want to wait around in the heat.
He played at the Philly Live8 thing the next day. I hope BB King NYC or someplace books him soon.

no no- this is a different gig. He played LAST NIGHT (July 29) in Toms River. Turned out to be a perfect summer night- clear skies, about 70-75, nice breeze. PERFECT. Which was good, since it was an outdoor show.

No opening act either- he went on ON TIME (that's a nice change of pace, thanks Keith!) at 8pm, played until 9:30.

I wasn't sure how he would be live, just because when I've seen him live on tv, on awards shows and such, he's a bit sloppy it seems. Maybe he's simply more comfortable on HIS stage, with HIS crew, etc. He's not sloppy at all. His voice & guitar (and band) sounded as good as the record.

FYI, his bass player now is his old bass player from the Ranch- pretty cool.

He's playing in London soon. But if I go one of my musician buddys will take the piss of me for years after.

You see, in the UK, country is hardly the coolest thing. Is it worth seeing?

Go for it Essexboy! I could kick myself for missing the KU/Paisley show that came though last year.

Is Urban still opening for Bryan Adams in the UK? If so, Bryan is another great live performer. Definitely a good show to see. (Keith is closer to Bryan Adams in musical style than he is to country, anyway.)
