hmmm...
james burton wrote the book and nobody ever did it better or tastier... burton is on a par with hendrix as far as being a creator/innovator... he's truly one of the greatest musicians/guitarists of our time... that said apples and oranges and of course paisley is a great guitar player in his own right...

Comparing Burton with Paisley is somewhat like comparing apples to oranges. Both great players and appear to be nice guys. That being said
Burton has a 40+ year career - Paisley 5 years or less A major difference is that Burton is studio player so he has played on or for many artist covering a wide range of styles (country, rock, pop). Thought I read somewhere that he plays on some Frank Sinatra stuff. As a studio player, he is there to support the song and or artist, thus there are limited solos and sutle fills etc. Paisley so far has really only played guitar on his stuff. Thus since he is the "star" he can (may be) be a little flashier. Of course, most of his playing also is in support of the song so again not a lot of solos for solos sake. It is important to note that many artist don't play guitar on their records even if they are good or may play live. Eric Clapton generally doesn't do long solos when guesting on other artists recording projects (excluding where long solos may be expected e.g., Mayall). Comparisons between different players styles is can be useful and is interesting (may help you narrow down how you might play). We can have "favorite" players. But this there is really no way to determine the best (fastest, etc.) so why to we do this. Of course, we could have a guitar toss, than you could have the best guitar tosser, because he or she would toss it the furthest or strongest because he can pick up the most guitars. Because Burton has had a much longer and more diverse career compared to Paisley it would seem to me that if there was (were) a method(s) to rate those criteria mention in the intial post that you would be able to find something by Burton (shear numbers) that would top Paisley. I would rather just acknowledge that both are excellent players and leave it go at that. JMO Jim |

No way to pick. Both are great stylists and innovators. The music world is better for having both of them around.
BTW - Welcome to the board. For what it's worth, lots of our favorite artists are actually on this board, and use their real name as their username. To avoid confusion, maybe consider using "PaisleyFan" or something similar? It's your choice of course, but just a suggestion. |

what is the point of the question ?
James is a legend.....
Brad will become a legend..if he stays healthy and survives...but he needs a few more decades under his belt... Whats better ? A 63 Split Window Fuel Injected Coupe or A 2006- Z06 One will knock the other right off the planet..but that does not mean it's better... |

James or Brad?
I like both of them and can listen to either one for days!
There are so many great players out there and of all the greats no 2 play the same or sound the same, that's what sets them apart from each other. There are so many players that try to sound just like JB or Bp or Brent, Redd, Roy N, Roy B etc. they don't let there on personality come out. Just be yourself, steal from the best and make it part of yours and play what you feel.

I love Brad's guitar playing but dislike his music. I find his guitar playing in general to be opposite to his songs. I wish i could get on board with what he is doing but there are just somethings i can't get past. Someone said oh, listen to that cigar song, but honestly i really disliked it. The best thing i heard by him is that little clip of him playing that Z amp. Dang that guy can play. It is funny you mention JB, cause (just my opinion here ) if he was someone who played on other folks records i would prolly really like him. I just don't like his song, lyics, sensibility or the sound of his voice. I am glad he is around and happy others get pleasure from his performances, but his stuff is just not for me.

FYI-
Jame Burton is sponsoring a 3-day event in August 19-21 for charity in his home town of Shreveport with proceeds going to charity. As part of the festival there will be a concert on Sat featuring James and other guitar greats.( check out website for more info) Brad and James per Vintage Guitar are supposed to debut a new instrumental from Brad's album. Could it get any better. Alot of guitar players today myself included wouldn't be playing Tele's if we had never seen or heard James Burton performing with Ricky Nelson,Elvis Presely, John Denver , Emmylou Harris or Jerry Lee Lewis -these folks all shared one thing: the greatest tele picker in history. : |

Paisley.
I remember hearing Burton with Emmylou and some Elvis and here and there but I never heard anything really hot that I can recall. Yes he is an original and an innovator and an influence, but I never heard any hot. Paisley is all that and hot, but hot keeps geeting hotter with each generation that comes forth. no compare.

Never heard anything hot from Burton?
Well it's just my opinion, but I would put James Burton's playing on Dale Hawkin's "Suzy Q" up against anything ... simple, smokin', perfect and one of the truly iconic guitar riffs of rock 'n' roll. And he was 15 when he played it.
I think when we debate things like this we have to bear in mind that without James Burton, there would be no Brad Paisley, among many many others. Besides, the logical conclusion to this kind of thinking is that Yngwie Malmsteen (or whoever, fill in the blank) is the best guitarist, because he is the fastest and flashiest. The "hottest." Which is a criteria of judgement that has done a lot more harm than good to the world of guitar playing :D p.s. Ever heard Ooh Las Vegas by Gram Parsons?

I can't even comment on the debate.. Burton vs. White would be more appropriate.. or Paisley vs. Urban.

I have this list
of my Top 10 favorite recordings - ever - the top three of the Top 10 change positions from time to time, but for the last 15 years or so they have been:
Someday Soon - Judy Collins Return of the Greivous Angel - Gram Parsons El Paso - Mary Robbins Can you guess what those first two have in common? Oh - Hello Marylou has spent time in the Top 10 as well. |

silly question...music ain't no competition...most non-musicians don't carry about chops, they like the SONG and how it's all put together for the total package.
