Hey Cowtowner, good luck on your search...and of course, you should rely on your own ears/fingers, etc ultimately, but I also like to hear/read what other players think about guitars I'm considering....so I can tell you I've played 6 different Hwy 1 Teles (all Maple fretboards), and while each had it's own "voice", they all exhibited what I call a more "open" tone than the MIM tele I was comparing them too. Out of the 6 I played, I found 2 that were really nice, and 1 that I would have bought, but the MIM's tone, feel, vibe just wouldn't let me have any other.
I may be in the minority, but I really liked the finish on the Hwy 1... good luck on gettin input, and then go out an strap on a few...let us know what you do! |

I played a couple maple-neck Hwy-1's and liked 'em. As for rosewood, sometimes capping, whether rosewood or maple, creates a stiffer neck and snappier dynamic, but probably not always. I'd try a Classic 50's too. Also compare rosewood Hwy-1 with maple, see if one hit's you differently.

I've got a bad case of tele fever lately. I've found a new
Highway 1 Butterscotch in a local music store for $560.00 that I think has sat in the shop a while. I going to take my own amp in and try it. My problem is that I've found shop tryouts playing by yourself over their amp can be decieving. Maybe it's just me! but I would much prefer doing my tryout with my group/my amp rather than solo in a music store. You can really tell what it's doing then. In my lifetime I've only found 1 shopowner that would do that. Of course if I was in their shoes I would probably be the same way. I may give him a try anyway, all he can say is no. Platefire |
