Is This A Cunetto Relic?

Made in 1997, but COA looks like it came from a '52RI. Owned by a monk?

I believe you are correct. The COA appears to be from a '52 Reissue, not a Custom Shop Relic. As I understand it, all the Cunetto era relics had COA's signed by John Page. I don't see his signature anywhere on the paperwork. All the COA's Ive seen have specifically indicated the year of build and whether the guitar was in fact a "Relic."

Something is definitely screwy here...all the pics show a Cunetto era Nocaster but the certificate is from a production line 52 RI. Maybe the original owner was given the wrong COA. Like SLG said, all the Cunetto's were signed by John Page (except the very end of their runs). And the 52 RI certificate looks nothing like the one from the Custom Shop. If you're interested, you should drop the seller a line, that's a good BIN price.

EDIT TO ADD: I wonder if the serial number on the certificate matches the one on the guitar? That would make things even stranger???

Hi,

It is a Cunetto Relic, but the certificate is wrong.

Birdseye neck, CS logo stamped into wood instead of a decal under finish. Relic stamped into body. Those are all Cunetto details.

But that certificate is not for that guitar IMO.

BTW, if it is a Cunetto, and not some scam, that buy it now price is great.

Looks like the seller added to the desc and noted it is the wrong COA. Said it came in a gig bag so my guess is the original buyer got it at GC didnt want to pay extra for the case and inside the gig bag was the wrong 52ri cert.

It really should have the case but its a good deal and it does look like a Cunetto one to me.

I have seen Cunettos go for over 3k so that was a good score.

The 10k bridge pickup is the whole deal my guess is your gonna like it better than the 2002 model but you never know till you plug it in. Even if you dont like it at all you can always get your $$ back by selling it and maybe even make a little profit.

The pickups are cool, but for me it was the 9.5 radius, big frets, and the thin C shape that sold me. I love mine, will never sell it.

However, I can't keep both. Either the Cunetto or my '02 Nocaster will be up for sale. Anybody know how to go about obtaining a replacement CS certificate for the Cunetto? Thanks.

Look on the Fender site for the number for Fender cistomer service. Not 100% sure how you have to handle it but I think you might be able to take the guitar to an authorized Fender dealer they will send a request to Fender for the right cert.

Replacement COA's are next to impossible to get. The only way to get one is if you are the original purchaser of the guitar and can prove it with an original receipt. This topic has been discussed over and over on the FDP. It would be impossible to get one signed by John Page since he no longer has anything to do with the Custom Shop. Still a cool guitar at a great price.

In the auction there wasn't a really good pic of the vintage electronics under the control plate. Would it be possible for you to post a pic of them after you get the guitar?

Yeah I use to have 2 post Cunetto...a friend of mine has a Cunetto I thought his was more realistic relic job...but the neck is way to thin for me...I dig the chunky necks on the newer ones

Things have been crazy lately at the homestead.

The Cunetto arrived just as described in the auction and it was a '96 not a '97. The first thing that impressed me was the finish. Absolutely the best relic job I have ever seen. The Cunetto weighed in at an even 8 pounds, almost a full pound heavier than my '02, but it didn't feel heavy and was very balanced. The neck was not as thick as my '02 but I did like the 9.5 radius better. The 10k bridge pickup was the best part. Tele twang with attitude. I really struggled with making a great partscaster but ultimately I need to recoup my money for my upcoming wedding. Had I found the Cunetto prior to buying my '02 I would have looked no further (and saved myself some money). The finish, sound and playablity of the Cunetto is exceptional. Bottom line, the bigger neck on my '02 just feels right. Plus the finish is starting to wear through and it looks/feels great. If I could afford to keep both I would.

Actually, I am looking for a Nocaster but I've had both the Cunetto's and the TM models and honestly, I feel like you; I like the bigger necks and the smaller radius on the TM models better than the Cunetto's. So, if you decide to get rid of your TM, let me know.... :D
