Why do some Teles have humbuckers in the neck?
The Telecaster Custom introduced a humbucker in the neck position. Why the neck position? Most guitars with both humbuckers and single coils have the humbucker in the bridge, i.e. the HSS Strat. What was the reasoning for putting the humbucker in the neck position?

To me, it isn't a Telecaster without that twang from the slanted single coil.
On my '74 Custom there is such a contrast between the bridge and the Seth Lover humbucker it's like having two different guitars.

A humbucker really contrasts sonically to a single coil.
IMO, 'buckers are indispensable Tele neck pickups. You can play jazzy stuff, and twangy stuff, and only bring one guitar! |

Mixed bag meaning it just depends on what wanted or what player really
understands when combing the combination. Some well received jazz or other recordings historically were done on std Tele neck pickup in past.

Fender kinda made a robot guitar about 30 years before Gibson got there. The ability to blend tone and volume and mix the pups with the 70s Tele Customs as well as play it as a traditional Tele makes for a very versatile instrument.

In the old days before all the aftermarket pickup makers started a common mod was to put a Gibson Humbucker in the neck.
Andy Summers and Albert Collins liked it that way.

im pretty sure the answer is Keef.
practically speaking, I agree when you dont have a trad Tele single in the bridge you lose about 60% of its Tele-ness. Also, a lot of people are not too keen on Tele neck pickups. (Im not one-I happen to love Tele neck pickups-just gotta get the right one) probably the same number of people dont like Strat bridge pickups, so in the bucker goes.

I'm pretty sure that the reason some Teles have a humbucker in the neck is NOT to make us do their bidding like mindless idiots.
But then again ....

I went with a neck 'bucker in my Squier Standard.
At the time I wanted some nice distorted sounds for rock and blues and I thought this would be the best way to get them. I have it mounted very low to balance it with the single coil bridge pup. An added side benefit of this arrangement is that it will sustain for days! I guess being mounted low and all, it doesn't pull on the strings too much. PS: I would never want to give up the single coil in the bridge. It just sounds too good! |

Of course, you could wire one any way you want.
