Merle is probably my favorite artist of all time. I have a tradition in my house. I call it "Merle in the Morning" . Before work, I plug in my Tele and play along with a Hag record. Puts me in the right frame of mind for work.

I saw him with Willie Nelson and the guy from Asleep At the Wheel, Ray Price among others on PBS the other night (highly recommended viewing). Merle can play and he had a beautiful sunburst Tele, monster neck grain and after seeing the back of the body for a second, I was surprised that it was a neck through design. Think it had a Fender logo on the headstock.
The show is called "last of the Breed" http://www.soptv.org/breed-willie-ne...ard-ray-price/ |

Hag is a mixed bag. Nichols used to say that he was the best and worst guitar player he'd ever played with... I've seen him absolutely be awesome and completely suck....
he is my all time all around favorite singer, songwriter and band leader... he has always put great great great players around him... glad you saw him on a good night! that stuff is magic.

A friend of mine's late father, Steve Davis, was Ray Price's lead guitar player years ago.
My friend told me Price used to fire the band regularly. His father was an amazing player (I've heard tapes of him) and one of the unsung guitar greats out of Dallas, Texas. |

I Love Hag... like Getbent says, I've heard him do some solos that absolutely kill, and some that flop.
His son Ben is one hell of a guitar player too.

Remember the golden age of the 3/4/5/6/or more CD box set ?
I got my share and, like most people, was always surprised at how little I listened to them other than the initial run-through and the hunt for rarities on them. After all this time the CD box set I have listened to most ? Down Every Road by Haggard. W/out doubt even when I don't feel like listening to anything. It really surprised me. Bob D idolizes him and so do I.

"That's the way love goes" is one of the finest songs of all time, IMO. Amazing vocal performance and the solo is SO sweet but I am sure whether it is played by Merle or Reggie. This tune still sounds "modern" 30+ years after its recording.

In the '80's my father took my wife and I to a Merle concert at the Rosemont Horizon (the show was sponsored by Marlboro and they passed out free packs of smoke before the show--you literally couldn't see the stage when the lights went down and everyone lit up!!!).
Anyhow, I wasn't a country fan at the time--I played in a rock band and didn't care for that old timey country stuff. After the show I walked out of the venue exclaiming, "That guy had the best voice I've ever heard!" Been a fan ever since.

I saw him a few years ago with his son on guitar I think. He must have been on a so so night himself. It was really cool though small venue we got up by the front and really enjoyed all the good old Merle Tunes.
It was a benefit for an area of Arkansas that had been hit by tornadoes. They say he owns some land up there.

First time I went to see him with my parents- he pulled a Jones and didn't show up. Luckily Marty Robbins put on a hell of a show. I saw him a few years ago in Knoxville and I was impressed. Roy Nichols got me interested in the guitar at 6 years old with Hag's first hits. I still like to sit and play along to "Think I'll Just Sit Here and Drink" along with some others.
