NGD - The nicest custom Tele ever? You be the judge.
I was profiling the transformation of my #1 Tele in the Tele Home Depot section of the site, but the thread has gone stale. So, in celebration of the resurrection of this old beast, here is a new thread.
Ok so it's not the nicest frankenguitar ever, but it's got some real character, quality workmanship, and really nice parts. This guitar came to me from a Toronto studio musician who built it back in the early 80s. The neck and tuners were from a 1969 Fender Telecaster. The bridge pickup was from an early 60s Tele, it had a Dimarzio humbucker in the neck, and a 1975 Stratocaster pickup in the middle position. The body was made in someone's basement, and the rest of the parts were junk... but it sounded incredible. *picture in second post* In April I sent it to a local guitar builder named Tim Frank. He used a piece of reclaimed pine from the old Queen's Wharf built in the early 1800's in Toronto, Canada. Based on growth rings, the trees were 200+ years old before they were cut. That makes the wood used for the body over 400 years old. Talk about dry aged wood! I decided to re-tele the thing, so I ordered a period correct reproduction neck pickup from The Pickup Wizard. The strap buttons are from a late 50s Musicmaster/Duo Sonic, so the same as used on all Fender guitars of the era. The rest of the stuff was sourced by Tim, with the only request to keep it vintage inspired and within my budget. Bridge seems to be from an 80s MIJ Tele. All the electronics used were top notch + cloth pushback wiring. Here is a more detailed account of the transformation: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home...e-content.html Blah, blah, blah, here are the photos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So, how does it sound? Did you keep the same bridge pickup? You sorta scared me when you said it "sounded incredible" but you went ahead and built a new body, anyway. (By the way, it is very good looking and I, too, pine for such old wood.)
