Basically my budget is around $200. Before anyone says it - if i find a used CV Tele, i will jump on it :P but i've only seen 1 go that low and I didn't have the money back then. I'm still hoping for one, but if I can't, this will be my 2nd option.
The $200 is basically a fixed amount. I might be able to get some money later next year to mod the guitar if needwd but I think Im going to nwed the guitar by the end of this year. It's for my praise team and we play all the well-known artists (hillsong, starfield, chris tomlin, jesus culture, david crowder). At home or with a small jam session with some friends, I'd probably do some heavier stuff (skillet, red, thousand foot krutch) as well as funkish rock kind of stuff (rhcp). I can get the standard for about $140, the customs for $150-180 and the affinity for $100-110 I've also considered getting an Epi LP standard and getting a coil tap on it but I don't know if I would like a Les Paul or not (they have none at my guitar center. Yeah.. It's weird) The only one of these 4 teles my gc did have was the affinity. The neck felt nice (even though some people call it cheap) i like the smoothness of it. It's almost like my Squier VM jazz. I played it through a vox amp (cant remember which one.. It was 15 watts i think and it was like $100 hahaha) so of course it didnt sound great, but i kind of liked it. But i only tried it on clean. The bridge sounded a little too "thin". I think it needed some more "body" to it. The necj pickup was pretty nice though. Yeah. So how do these guitars sound clean and over driven? And how much hum do the p90s make if i were to play the song Say It Aint So (the chorus)? And if it's not asking too much (which im sure it is), could someone put pros and cons of each guitar? Thanks for any help in advance :) |

Skip the Affinity and get a Std. or a Custom if you can't find a VM or a CV in your price range. (and I agree, you won't find many CVs for $200) Which one depends on whether you prefer P90's to typical Tele Bridge and Neck pickups.
CV's will always be the easiest to modify because they use MIA specs so parts are mostly drop ins but any of them can be upgraded without to many problems. You can get all the advice on that you need right here when the time comes to do it.

Don't waste your money on the Epi LP, no where near as good as the cheapest Squier, and thats not because I'm a Fender, Tele kinda guy, just telling you the truth. Starting with the Affinity wouldn't be the worst thing you could do, personally thats what I'd recommend until you can get the CV.

I like my Squier Standard. Mine was made in Indonesia and the quality is good. The pickups are decent too. The neck pickup can be a little dark, but the Fezz Parka mod clears that up. If you get one of these and do a good set up on it, it will serve you well.

I"m afraid i have to respectfully disagree with you. I bought an Epiphone LP about 11 years ago and it's always played wonderfully. Holds tuning great, even after long periods of not being played, good feel, not a hint of buzz or rattle anywhere, even though it's never been properly set up... just an all around easy guitar to play. Perhaps i just got lucky?

An affinity can be an EXCELLENT guitar if you get the right one and do the right work to it :)

Ad is a month old, if he's still got it you should be able to get it for $200 cash. Be ready to say "hey I'm on my way with $200, let's do this". It's a CVC and has an upgraded neck P/U to boot. Hell, if it was local I'D be on my way over there. |

doof, I think you got lucky , but I probally exaggerated too, since all Epiphones can't be that bad, I was referring mostly to thoses entry level / beginner packs. my experience with a couple of those was awful.

Gotcha... yeah with the entry level packs, i'll give you that one. Mine was kind of a mid-level guitar i'd say, on par with MIM tele's, price-wise. Made in Korea though, and i've never had a complaint.

I'd also like to know whether the Custom with a coil tap would be more versatile, or the Custom II. |
