The futures opinion on todays new guitars.

I have never really seen this question asked before.

What does everybody think that they are going to say thirty years from now about the guitars fender is building today?

Is it gonna be on the level of the late 70s stuff, are they gonna flip out on them like the fifties and sixties stuff? I doubt either one of those.

But compared to all the different eras, where does the 2000+ guitars stand? When did the current era start? At what date are they going to say this one is worth more because its built before/after 20XX?

Being that most of them are mass produced besides the custom shops, I doubt they'll be all the rave.

Interesting idea. By comparison, there's an absolute flood of guitars in terms of quantity compared to what they were able to produce in the 50s/60s, though one could argue that after the buyback in the mid-80s to now, there's been a lot of improvements and some interesting specs to come out, and in retrospect they might say this is when Fender hit its stride or something. Or not. Guess it all depends on how many guitars survive the long haul vs whether Fender survives the long haul vs whatever else could happen...

Ha, there will probably be a rage about the "aged" ceramic magnets from "vintage" MIM pickups... what do we know.

Agree. Anything other than CS guitars won't be much worth talking about.

Everything changed in the 90's with the onset of CNC manufacturing. Cheap, high-quality woodworking. Today, even the high end CS masterbuilts start from CNC necks and bodies. Unlike the 50's and 60's, even today's cheap guitars have good playability.

I think today's instruments 50 years from now could have the same sort of desirability as the 70's gear does now. Nothing special about the 70's stuff today except age - they weren't all that when they were new.

When I bought my first serious electric - a Yamaha rgz prototype, I was tempted by a telecaster which was more expensive. This was about 1989. I was advised that the Yamaha was a better price and the tele was crap. I bought the Yamaha. Which I love btw. But now 1980s fenders are prized by some collectors. I figure that as long as there is quality control, fenders will always be desirable.

And my second serious electro is a tele. Bought it a fortnight ago and is on its way..

My 1987 Mary Kaye Strat is an absolute belter and that particular era is really desirable for Fender strats (not sure about tele's).

Seems to be because Fender was a small operation again from late 86 and it was much more custom shop like than the factory scale of now. The values of those 87's seem to be stupid at times - not sure what they sell for...

Brian.

Perhaps today's guitars will be really sought after and really expensive because they are made of this rare material called 'wood'. 'Real' wood may be an extra bonus thing.

Future dialogue:
- Yeah man... this polymer body and neck are great. But look what I have here, I guitar made completely of wood!!
- Wood? You mean from trees? AMAZING!! I remember going to a tree-park as a kid.

Not much probably because of mass-production.

Some of the special or limited edition stuff may be be worth something 20 or 30 years from now, but I'm not betting my retirement on 'em.

I agree. A lot of manufacturers are already using a lot of alternative woods, and other materials, for acoustics, because the woods are getting in short supply.
