I've heard one tune and seen the video...it was OK. I agree with your comparison.
I think the whole band is different?? Anyone know what happened to Pete...and the rest of the guys?!?! I know Pete has his own label and does a lot of producing so he might be pursuing other interests, but what about the rest of the guys? Cheers, MM

Pete is playing with Moot Davis live. I imagine he's doing lots of production too. Dwight's new guitarist is Keith Gattis and he's a great twanging country player. His new band is very good. I saw them last summer and was worried about how good they would be, but I was VERY impressed even though I'm a big fan of the old band. I don't think the drummer is that great, but that's just MO. |

I have the CD and
it's great! Great singing/songwriting/playing. Taras Prodaniuk is back on bass (I guess Lucinda did too much acid). Al Perkins is on a few cuts playing steel and Keith Gattis is on lead guitar and baritone. Dwight plays acoustic guitars and acoustic leads on a couple of tracks. It's not my favorite Dwight record, but it's a very good one.
Eagles related news bite - Timothy B. Schmidt sings harmony on the whole CD and Dave Roe sings on some with him. Very good over all. I like Pete, but IMHO Pete got a little too weird for my taste on Dwights last couple of records. I much more prefer to hear him on a Tele through the Deluxe. Johnny Isaacs

Lots of twangin guitar on this one...
If you guys want to listen to the album, it's up on CMT.com on their "Listening Party" page... http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/yoakam...32/album.jhtml ... You can basically listen to the whole album free of charge... They do that on selected albums on CMT...
I've been a Dwight fan since the late '80s when the "New Traditionalism" style of Country was blarring on the juke boxes of NYC's Country "Dive Bars"... This album does evoke his earlier stuff... It's a guitar heavy album, and sounds like Teles to me... The new guitarist, who I'm unfamiliar with, does a good job IMO of throwing in those twangy low string statements that define a song, sort of in the vein of Pete... I've seen Dwight live a number of times over the years, and seen him strap on a fancy-looking Thinline himself for a couple of tunes... Joe |

Clarification....

Vince Gill said when he was new in Nashville one of the first people he met was Roger Miller and Roger told him this: "This is the most important information you'll ever get in this town or business. Learn to keep your pills seperate from your pocket change. I once swallowed .83 cents!" Dwight's not known as "Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky" but I love his music and that what it's all about! Johnny Isaacs

I've been listening to the album & like it a lot. Definately guitar heavy & some good rockin' stuff on it. Check out Dwight's website for info, video & audio:
http://www.dwightyoakam.com/main.html Did anyone catch him on John Stewart's Daily Show? You can see it here: http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/t...ow/index.jhtml He seems like a pretty goofy character in this clip.

The new CD is excellent
I have to agree with Johnny that Keith does not over-use the bender. It's nice to hear it so prominently on this record. The guy def listened to a lot of Clarence.
Skip Edwards and Taras--good to see they are still in the fold. Dwight can still write a heartache song like no one else and the harmonies are amazing. And I can't believe no one has mentioned the incredibly hot model Dwight is shown with in the CD pics! |

i love the early dwight stuff. but the last few albums have left me cold. i figured this was more of the same, till i saw 'em on Jay Leno. WOW, loved it. high energy, it really reminded me of the raw-er feel of guitars and cadillacs, now i'm gonna go out and buy this record.
i think gattis is giving him the kick in the @$$ he's needed for the last few years. |

After listening to the streaming audio over at CMT, it reminds me about the importance of a lead vocalist with a lot of character and soul. Dwight still has the Dwight sound. Most people will not notice that Pete's no longer in the group. It's a shame, as Pete's always been one of my favorite pickers. But it's usually the character and personality of the vocalist that sells records. The band is usually a tool to help realize the "vision."
Pete had a lot do with the production ethic of the earlier DY albums, too. This new cd does not seem to be lacking in production at all. |

Bought it at lunch today !!!
GREAT ALBUM...love the songs, vocals (great stuff...real country, Dwight is spot on !) and the guitar and baritone is great. Keith's tone is more less bright, seems he doesn't have to spike the treble knob to 10 like Pete did.
Some great stuff on this album...ah, yes...real Bakersfield twang ! John

Dwight/Gattis Sound
I'm still wearing the CD out since the mid-June release. I also saw the concert in Pozo, CA pre-release. The show was excellent. Gattis has a lot of ability. He does his own thing but does a good job copping the Pete licks on the requests...just not as polished (yet) but very agressive and talented. Over-Bends? Don't think so. If you got it, use it where appropriate. If you're trying to get the Mooney/Bakersfield flavor then it's all about the pedals. I'm not familiar enough with baritone guitars but I think they use them on some of the album cuts...sounds like a bass tele...cool.
The hottest part of the band though has to be the bass/drum team. I didn't catch the names but apparently the Johnny Cash (former) road crew...what a groove. I was in Hick Heaven. Lots of stand-up bass. The show was great and the album is also...a bit different that the earlier stuff but it's growth in a good direction. Tom |

Saw Pete Anderson last night in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was with Moot Davis and band playing in a very small bar.
Pete Anderson has chops unlike anyone I've ever seen that close up. Tricks, incredible chord voicing, just a very sophisticated player all together. He was playing a big box Epiphone w/ P90s through two Line 6 amps. Really nice fellas too. |

I have been playing this album quite a bit, and Keith Gattis has quickly become one of my favorite players.
Doesn't overdo it at all. Tasteful, simple licks that just stick out in your mind. |
