Richard Thompson just got a Kellycaster

The incredible Richard Thompson received a Kellycaster Blackguard from and modified by Bobby Eichhorn and uses it for much of his new CD. A middle pickup was added by Eichhorn. Although Thompson is usually associated with his worn out late 50s Strat, he has always sounded like a Tele player to me, so I'm glad to see him with the New York built Telecaster. As a matter of fact can anyone tell me what the hell his other electric axe , a Ferrington Custom, is .... a modified Hard Tail Strat or a Tele modified with a middle pickup ????`

The Ferrington electrics (he has two of them) have a P-90 in the neck position, a Strat pickup in the middle, and a Broadcaster pickup in the bridge position, each with a volume knob. No tone controls.

Funny, though, to my ears when he plays it, it sounds just like his old Strat!

Cheers, Tim

I'd call the Ferrington a Fender-style guitar with a Strat hard-tail and an odd-ball pickup/wiring scheme. I always thought he sounded more Tele-like in the Strat days, a real thin wirey tone, often in the 2 or 4 position.

I do remember a picture of him back in the 80's playing a blackguard at some show, I think it was one of the Cropredy festivals, and shortly afterwards saying that he'd borrowed a Tele, quite liked it, and if anyone had a '52 that they wanted to let go cheap, give him a call....

The last time I saw RT at the Boulder Theater he played a blackguard style Tele for a couple of tunes.
The other times I had seen him electric he only played the Ferrington but that night he also played an early large-headstock Strat for a large portion of the show.

Seeing him on Jan 31, it'll be interesting to see what he plays, I was expecting the Ferrington. It's in a smallish theatre so should get a good view.

That's an acoustic show with Danny Thompson, so he'll be playing the Lowden.

Kellycaster

Nice guitar. Why is it called a Kellycaster? Someone's name I suppose. I'm a big RT fan. "Old Kit Bag" is a masterpiece, to me anyway. He has always ahd a tele-like sound IMO. His attack and twang seem be well suited to a telecaster. I'd really like to see him in a live performance one day. I guess I'd have to travel for that.

Richard Thompson's coming to Sydney too!!

March-April is the main folk festival period in Australia and he'll be doing lots of appearances - maybe even in Perth?.

We'll see him at the Blue Mountains Folk Festival, which takes place in the town of Katoomba about 1.5 hours drive out of Sydney. There are five stages and about 2000-3000 people turn up. It's very congenial and the musicians can often be found in the lobby of the vintage hotel at the centre of the festival so you can ask them dumb questions especially at brekfast. :)

I've had the privilege of seeing RT 7 times so far. The last 3 band shows he's primarily played the 2 Ferringtons or the blackguard with the strat neck. It amazes me that he always sounds pretty much the same no matter what he's playing. He's just plain phenomenal live. If you get a chance, go see him. I will personally refund your ticket price if you are not blown away. He's that good. I can't wait until he gets back this way. The last show was his "1000 years of Popular Music" where he plays everything from chants to Britney Spears.

I saw him acoustic in October. It was a good show, but it adds a weird vibe to all his songs. Though he did manage "Don't Sit on My Jimmy Shands" pretty well with just an acoustic and a double bass, which surprised me.

Anyone heard the Grizzly Man soundtrack?

Anyone checked out RT's soundtrack CD for the Werner Herzog film, Grizzly Man? (about this guy named Timothy Treadwell, who lived by the bears...and died by the bears)

It's a cool CD, nearly all of it devoted to a mix of RT's acoustic and electric guitar work. I'm often leery of soundtrack CDs but for hardcore RT fans, this is worth checking out.

I simply adore "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight", and it always sounded like he was using a tele. I've tried to get my strat to sound like that, but couldn't.
