Since I got my Tele...
I have got into a very strange frame of mind where I wonder "Why doesn't so and so use a tele instead? I wonder what they would sound like!"
I have had that thought while watching youtube videos of: Jerry Garcia (I great mystery to me why he never used a tele!) Chuck Berry Hank Marvin George Harrison Buddy Holly ... and the list goes on! I know it's silly, but I hear something I like and I often think "Great! It would have sounded so much better if it was a tele though!" And this comes from a guy who probably can hardly tell the difference in sound between a tele and a strat. Is this normal? Do I need help/intervention?

I'm sure they all could have....
there must have been Teles kicking around in the places they hung out with friends... I'm the opposite... now that I've been able to see youtube clips of all the old bands I grew up with..listening to the LPs... I'm surprised by how many of those familiar recorded sounds... were done with Telecasters... I'm like.. no shiite.. they were using a tele?... coool...

It's the tele-elitist attitude that we all suffer from!
As trev said I'm sure that a lot of the greats did in fact have tele's behind the scenes. |

Yep, he did Tonemonkey, however, as far as I know, only on Let it be. I'm sure that all of them tried telecasters. For example, I cannot imagine Jerry Garcia never having tried one. I'm sure at some point someone gave a tele to JG and said "Here, try this one". I wonder what his reaction was: "Yeah, it's ok... but not for me, thanks."?
Trev, yeah, that happens too... although my reaction now is "coool... but of course!" :-P

Sorry about the enigmatic title by the way. It was not meant as a 'mystery lure'. I just could not think of a clear one that was short enough. Since I got my tele... my other guitars are heartbroken.

ha ha ... but of course...
I come into this Tele thing only this century,,, though did most of my listening last century.... I did spend a lot of time around music/bands locally... there were no/few Teles around,,, strats /gibbos..yeh plenty... it's been a steep learning curve...

When it comes to Jerry Garcia (pictured with an SG in my avatar) and the Tele, I wondered about it for a long time. Here's a really good article about him and his guitars,
http://obie1.homesite.net/deadcd/garcia_guitars.htm and here's a quote from it: Jerry had about 25 guitars, but 70% of his time in the spotlight he played just 3, all custom built by the same luthier Doug Irwin (Sonoma, CA). After a series of Gibsons SGs, Les Pauls (with P90 single-coil pickups), and a couple of Teles and Strats he declared: "I don't like any guitars that are available. I'm trying to have a guitar built."

Hey H.Mac, yeah, I guess after the mid/late 70s, JG never looked back. Funnily enough, I prefer his sound with the publicly available guitars (SG, Travis Bean... and yes even that strat! :-P ). Cool link with great pics, thanks!

I completely agree- his '69 tone with the SG, '72 tone with Strats, and '75-'76 tone with the single-coil Travis Bean, all superior to the tone of any of the Irwin guitars, that all sound to me sort of thin and lifeless.

I have also noticed that in recent years the Tele has become popular with the younger crowd a lot more. I was watching Disney channel with my nephew the other day and some Disney kid was playing a red Thinline in his video. I see this more and more all the time lately.

Since I got my Tele... I don't play no HB equipped guitars. Even the Strats are neglected! But I like the single coils better than my HB guitars.

I read that Buddy Holly was really an acoustic player at heart. Maybe the center pup fit his sound better? Also he came to fame near the time of the Strat introduction and it would have been cool to have one, plus I think Leo Fender gave them out as sort of promos? The Tele was a cowboy guitar then.

I feel the same when I see guys playing an SG.
And why doesn't the rhythm player in AC/DC use an Esquire instead of that Gretsch with the front 2 pickups missing? Thanks,

I'm sure most of these guys were like everyone else at the time. Used a tele in the studio, but "wouldn't be caught dead playing that chunk of wood live!"
Since I got my tele I've become gear obsessed and bought an SG, a Taylor, a Super Swede and two amps. Somehow, I've kept my wife in the process! |
