Those newer Schecters are pretty nice guitars. I don't know about $400, though. They are only about $600 new.

schecter tele

I have been gigging with one for 2 and a 1/2 years now. I bought it as an affordable option while I wait for a really fantastic instrument (I have not even decided what that is yet!!!).

It has a split-coil arrangement on the humbuckers. It gives you versatility of course; but not the best single-coil sound in the world. I tend to use it for really treble funky rhthyms on the bridge and I use the mid-position with the wah so it does not break up as much as with both coils - they give a lot of output. I like to play jazz mainly and the humbuckers are fantastic - I love the neck tone on this instrument.

The neck has a really nice feel to it, but the frets are very big. It took me a while to get used to them, but they are quite handy at a gig because of my nervous energy!

The main positive point I have found though is that it is built like a tank. It has taken some serious knocks in various pubs in Sydney when I play rock and the finish still looks new. Rock-solid with a simple bridge and good tuners - excellent for the brutalities of gigging.

To top it off, the finish makes it look like an instrument worth three times the price!

When I get a top-shelf instrument the schecter will always be there as my backup-workhorse :)

I wish they were around when I was buying my first guitar.

The Korean made Schecter Teles and Strats are wonderful instruments. The workmanship and finish were on a par with intruments costing over $1000. The hardware was top notch as well. The tuners (Grovers) and bridges (Tone Pro) are better than most hardware used on other import instruments. The weakest link would be the pickups. The Duncan-Designed humbuckers can be hit or miss. Most of the ones I've tried have been the equal of the original Duncans. Occasionally, you will get a dud or two. The neck is thin with a flat radius. If you want a vintage, chunky neck with a traditional radius you may not be happy with the Schecter neck. Be careful which model you are buying. Schecter makes their Teles and Strats in both 25 1/2" scale (Fender) and 24 3/4" scale (Gibson). Not all retailers realize or know the difference.

$400 is a decent price for the Schecter Teles and Strats. They use to show up on EBAY used for $250~$300, but people are starting to realize these are great guitars so prices are rising accordingly.

They are pro quality. They make a more authentic tele, too, but you don't see many of them. Their bread and butter tele is the "PT" line for Pete Townsend.

I've played a few and they are great guitars

The Blackjack series and some of the higher end come with real SD pups, Usually a JB and 59. The duncan designed pups are ok, but I just changed mine out for a JB bridge and Jazz neck in my Ultra. Some necks are skinny, but others are a fairly full C shape. $400.00 ain't bad the way they are selling nowadays. I got this Ultra for under $325, and with the new pups, it plays fantastic. Kind of Teleish, but with contours, so it's very comfortable to play. The hardware,(bridge, tuners, etc) are good quality and hold up well to lots of abuse.
Even though they are built in Korea, They are all checked and set up in California before they are shipped to the dealers.
Here's my Ultra
