Rounded Pick vs. Pointed Pick

I have been helping a neighbor kid with some basic guitar skills. He asked me why some picks are rounded and others have a more pointed tip to them. He wanted to know who/why you would use one over the other. Good question, but I did not really have a answer except use what feels best to him. In view of the pick thickness thread below got me thinking maybe someone here could answer his question better than I did. Thanks for some help.

Yeah, it's just a personal thing - when I do use a pick (rarely) I prefer the rounded edge of a standard pick shape, never the pointed end.

I use Jim Dunlop's (red or black) but I file down the tip to make it rounder... just feels better to me

.....I file my picks to where they have a sharp point. I can pick better that way.
