play it out...
I just wanted to add my 2 cents here.
I agree with you guys on the "play it out " issue.
I have been playing teles for all my life and giggin out with them. Back in 84 I got my first tele, a new blonde one, top loader, made in USA, E3 serial number. That guitar may be worth nothing for a vintage freak, but I played it for years as my sole guitar, and I never ever left it out of my sight. The people at the mixing table always laughed at me, because the guitar was with me to soundcheck, dinner, breaks etc...There was a Garage club we played every Thursday night when we were very almost kids (!). I knew everyone there, and the place was locked after sound check, but I always took the damm thing with me. The doorman always yelled at me when I walked by "the guy always with the guitar!".
Nowadays I follow the same philosophy. I own 12 Broadcasters and play them out everytime I can cuz Id hate them to just store them, they gotta be played you know.... I usually take 2 to a gig, and carry each one in a gig bag. Theyre always with me . Thank God I never had that problem and hopefully will never have one.
We usually do sound check, go out for dinner and then go back for 2 sets. They are always with me or 3 feet away from me the most, always at my sight.
But the reaction of the bar tender when we leave the place 30 minutes for dinner before the gig is always "hey you dont need to carry your stuff out, this place is safe".
My answer "so you mean my guitars dont deserve dinner with me?"
Of course the vintage guitar culture here in Spain is zero, and these are just viewed as used guitar by 99% of the people attending a gig.
