How does this always happen to me?
I'm in GC and one of the guys that works me some great deals tells me that the guy that sold them a mint 1978 Tele (that I almost bought) was in the store trying to sell a Fullerton 52RI. He introduces me and we start to shoot the **** and the guy says he inherited a few guitars and an amp from his brother in law (the 1978 Tele being one of them).
We go out to his car and he shows me an original early 1984 (early second year s/n 38xx) 52RI with case, COA, strap, bridge cover, modern bridge, pot, cap (these came with the parts to upgrade to modern specs), manual, original reciept and warrenty card (what Fender sent you when you sent in your warrenty) and even the original keys to the case! While we were talking the GC salesman returned with a figure from the Vintage Room guys in Hollywood, he says $800 and the dude says I want at least a grand. I step in and say, "I'll give you $900" and the dude says, "But I have this amp to sell too", he opens the trunk and there is a very early 1964 Deluxe Reverb!!! In all fairness, I tell him to sell the stuff on Ebay and he says it's too much hassle, to much time, etc. So, I tell him I can only afford $1800 for a package deal, he says $1900 and I say done deal!! ![]() ![]() ![]() I already own one of the first Tele 52RI (serial number is below #0150), sounds like a playdate!:) |

Holy crud what a smoking deal. My problem is when those times arise I never have the money, and when I have the money the deals never come my way.
CONGRATS!

Right place, right time ... very un-Dr. John of you!
If I could measure this by the jealousy it creates ... you measure very well Sir!

I didn't have the money, talked him into staying while I ran to the bank and did a cash withdrawel off of my credit card! Cost an extra $66 dollar fee and some higher interest, but look what I got in return!

Fender Electric Instrument Company. That's a real-deal pre-CBS BFDR. Way cool!

Wow. I've got an early BFDR, but mine looks as though it fell down the stairs after the stairs collapsed. That one looks really nice and is worth the price... the free guitar only sweetens the deal.

One day I am in Sam Ash and the man Sam Ash was there walking thru the place saying mark this down, get rid of this, clearance that. He walks up to a 1972 Marshall Super Lead (PTP and with a road case) that I was looking at and says, "Mark it down to $1100 and get rid of this"!! And the JCM 800 I got for $600 OTD, from one of my guys at GC! ![]() Then the limited (I believe only 12) Gibson 68RI LP Custom with an R9 top, list $8000, retail $6000, clearanced at $4000, my price OTD $2198!! ![]() Many more like that!! |

Beware that the serial numbers on the '52RI's are random. |

I own one with a March 1982 neck, pots 1981 and COA is dated April 1982 (not only first year, but one of the very first). This one that I just picked up COA is dated Feb. 1984, pots 1983, etc. (almost exactly two years into production, with no regards to the serial number).:) P.S. The original reciept shows that this guitar was bought on April 4, 1984 at a store that was right down the road from me and that I used to go into (long gone now), price payed new: $550 plus tax ($585.75).
