Who else has a reserve telecaster when gigging
and never use it. I have always had a spare tele on stage when gigging, but I never use the thing. I just changed strings after one years of not playing my spare tele. My current no 1 sounds so right, but the old one is also great. I must play it more......

I always have a reserve something on stage. Either a Tele,a TelePlus,an LP,or an Odessey. I had the " nightmare experience from hell" of breaking a string on stage in front of aprox. three thousand people without an extra string when I was only seventeen years old. Played the rest of the set with only five strings. I ALWAYS have an extra guitar and amp!

don't know why...I never needed it but I feel guilty having sooo many guitars that when I gig, I always take 2....sometimes I even play the backup just to play it..but I've never really needed it on stage....but I never take a bavckup amp.....I really trust all my amps to death...years ago, I was gigging and a tube blew and I was in deep s++t...sooo luckilly I had a Korg PX with me and I just put it thru the pa and saved the gig....to this date, I still carry that little practice thinggy on all my gigs...just in case.....sure beats carrying an extra amp....

extra stuff
Back when I gigged regularly, I always had at least one extra guitar. In fact at during one set at a gig, I broke a string on the main guitar, broke a string on the backup and had to play the rest of the set with a LP Jr with really high action normally used for slide.
I always had an extra amp also. Old tube amps can fail, and will do so at the worst moment. |

Well, yes I have a reserve Tele; but it's just which ever Tele I happen to not be playing ona particular tune. I have two Teles; a Nashville B-Bender model (I'd really like to get a hold of the designer who made it poplar) and a 69RI Thinline in Surf Green. I use both Teles all the time.

I always carry a backup guitar. Lately it has been another tele, but not always. I have played nothing but my #1 onstage, but use the backup guitar for rehearsals, just to keep it down to fighting weight. (everybody needs a good workout now and then). I was looking around last weekend realizing how many GREAT guitars I have, that would each be great gigging machines in their own right...

I carry one just to have something for a picker who may show up. That way I don't get my favorite one fingered, it's like someone driving your car it just don't feel right for awhile when you get it back.
And just a little bit of good feeling of having a spare...... Norm' :? |

I take two guitars to all gigs, and decide which one I'm going to play when I set up.
I also have a set of strings that are easily accessable on stage. If I break a string at the begining of a song or between solos I have a little schtick that I do. I quickly change the string on stage - in 35 to 40 seconds - while the rest of the band is performing, I then tune the string, and launch into the next solo again. Sometimes the crowd cheers when I get my guitar back in working order. I also either tune on the fly, or when I mangle the strings I'll wait for a verse and tune the whole guitar. |

I always take a spare....always.
Gang:
I usually take a semi hollow jazzer and a tele. That way, no matter what the room or environment, something will sound good. I've had a few gigs where one guitar or the other just didn't sound right, so I'd switch. It means an extra trip in from the "van", but taking an extra guitar gives great piece of mind. Make sure it's in tune before the gig too. Just in case you break a string or something. Take care. Emmitt

I usually have two Teles - the Nashville West and the TV Jones. Sometimes I only take one along, in which case I normally have the Trussart Steel DeVille in reserve...or a Strat.
I learned a long time ago to always have a backup. And more importantly, a backup amp!
