NGD...Custom Walnut Goodness!
My father in law bought a whole walnut tree from a sawmill in Missouri about 25 years ago and gave me quite a bit of it. Here's my first project.
Specs: Body chambered American black walnut, chambered with bookmatched walnut top and maple binding. Neck: Walnut with Indian rosewood board, graphite nut, Fender American Std strat tuners. Bridge: Wilkinson three saddle, top load. Electronics: Fender OV bridge pickup, Duncan SM3 mini neck pickup, 500k volume, 250k no load tone with .047 orange drop in a standard 60s tele wiring setup. Total weight is 6 lbs 10 oz of pure tele goodness. The bridge pickup is straight out of Bakersfield with twang for days. The neck pickup, partly due to my very heavy chambering (this thing is darn near hollow) has quite a bit of hollowbody tone to it. Big fat bass and lovely chime. It's been a lot of work, but totally worth it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The base and color coats are fresh mixed shellac, though I did topcoat it with acrylic lacquer for added durability. The tint used for the burst, back, sides and neck is called nigrosin...the same color dye used in Sharpies. :D |

Thanks. Some updates last night. Some work on the nut has it playing much better. It's unusual doing a COMPLETE setup entirely from scratch.
Had some electronic issues where is was getting no signal from the middle position and could not track it down. I ultimately swapped the switch for a four way and added a bridge+neck split option. I like that sound. Also some new tele knobs.
