NGD-For My Son
I have been waiting for weeks for his b-day to get here so I could give him his present. Today is his day and the look on his face when we gave him his gift is what it is all about. Below is my son with his new Highway One Telecaster.

Hey TeleKato the funniest thing about all that is that my mom played the accordion...My dad still has his 56 gibson es-125 (that he got when he was a kid) that he never got past home on the range on. My mom was giving him a hard time today when he was checking out my guitars and asking questions about them how he has one sitting on stand that he hasn't touched in 40 years...

Thanks everybody, but he is a great kid and I just recognize that.
Since we could not wrap it without him knowing what it was I bought him a new spiral notebook and on the first page wrote out the lyrics from Thunder Road from I got this guitar and learned how to make it talk to then end It's a town full of losers I'm pullin out of here to win. On the second page I wrote him a note about using that as inspiration to fill the rest of the notebook with his songs wishing him a happy birthday. Then I went in the other room and got the guitar and gave it to him.

Great present and that guitar will mean so much more to him down the road because you gave it to him.

I've tried everything to get my son inspired. Hell, he toured the Fender factory in Corona, hung out with Mike Eldred all day, he's seen a guitar in my hands every day since he was born... we live in Nashville, I have a studio, he's hung out with stars, etc, etc.
OP this post brings me great joy knowing a father and son have a common bond with guitars, but I admit I'm also jealous. My son is 11 yrs old. Maybe he'll get 'the bug' in a few years. I sure hope... or I fear when I'm no longer around my collection... let's say, won't be appreciated. Again, kudos to you!! |

You are an awesome dad, really a great moment captured in those pics. And the legacy of the twang lives on.

Very nice Bday gift Dad. I think it's incredible when a father can pass the gift of music along to his son.
My Dad played Big Band music in the 40's and although I had failed in my attempts to learn the sax as he had played, nearly destroying his instrument in the process, some year later I asked for a guitar for Christmas almost in fear of his refusal based on that past experience. Well instead he took me to a music store where we bought a used Danelectro Bass (which is what I wanted to learn to play) for $40. I bought a $5 guitar amp from a school chum and spent the rest of that winter in my room listening to records and learning to play by ear. The following June I became the bassist in my first rock and roll band and I sit here tonight looking at my guitar and bass herd and think back on a 35+ year career as a semi pro musician that all started with that $40 bass. Thanks Dad. Congrats to both of you and thanks for sharing the news with us. He looks awed by it.
