Is this a MIM Standard or HWY 1?

Good Evening,

So, today I purchased my very first Fender Telecaster. I found it off of craigslist for $200, got the guy down to $180 and made the 2.5 hour trip out to meet him. This guitar has been put the ringer. Worn all over, scratches, dents, belt rash, the whole nine. But I thought for the price, it was still a good deal. However, when I got the guitar in my hands, I wasn't so sure it was a MIM Standard like he had advertised. The finish was very matte and some of the wear looked a little....too pretty. Now heres the kicker. On the headstock it says "Made in USA" and the first two digits of the serial number, which is on the back of the headstock, is "Z3.." I thought all of the Mexi standards serial numbers began with MN or MZ. Now I don't know anything about these guitars, but could this be a MIM Highway 1 model? Any help is appreciated.

-Jack

If its been worn that much, I'd say Hwy 1. MIMs nowadays don't wear easy.

Thanks, Joe! What do you make of the "Made in USA"? Are HWY 1's made in the states?

I'm not an expert on prices, but I would think that a USA made tele for $180 is a screaming good deal...

On phone so I can't see too well but it looks like an 03 HW1. Great score and HNGD!

the seller must be a real dumbass ... it says Made in USA on the headstock ... so he advertises it as MIM ... which is worth a lot less than a HWY 1 ... so he screws himself out $150-200 ??? NICE SCORE !!!

Email Fender the serial number (or call them) and they can tell you exactly what it is.

I ran the serial number through the Guitar Dater Project, and apparently this guitar was made in Corona, CA in 1987. Nice score!!!

Actually, that is incorrect.

Your guitar was made at the
Corona Plant (Fender), USA
in the Year(s): 2003 - 2004

Thanks so much for all the help, fellas. I'm amazed how this turned out. So sounds like it's probably the Highway 1 then?

It's a 2003, but didn't the Hwy Ones have just 21 frets then?
