PROJECT: MEXSQUIRE

So I'm thinking about overhauling a 92 MIM top-loading Tele and making it into a Mexsquire of sorts.

Looking for a loud, twangy pickup without laying out too much $$.

Any of y'all using a DiMarzio Twang King out there??

I've used a twang king - loud and twangy is just what it is! I find it has a more even and smooth response than the '52RI, but you can vary the degree of rudeness with pick-attack. It also behaves better under heavy overdrive than most vintage style pups.

You might also try a VanZandt vintage or Rio Grande Tallboy - all not too pricey.

Do the VZ and the Rio Grande have the same sorta color/character to em?

I'm looking for something that'll give a good country/chicken pickin twang but will still work for rock. It's currently got an EMG active single coil in the bridge, which is way too dark sounding for my tastes...that's why the guitar is 'retired' right now.

Oh man, I love those early 90's toploaders. The neck! Oh my, the neck! Why can't they make them exactly like that again?

Anyway...

For some time I had a BL L-290TL in my 91 MIM toploader. It’s very hot and hard to beat for 48 bucks. I really like it. Now that pup is on my Partscaster. The bridge in those toploader is ferrous, so it will twang very nicely and it will also rock very well.
