is this a genuine classic 50s?

i'm gassing for a secondhand classic 50s tele. I found one online but noticed it has a different pickguard on it, and more screws than the original one. I have a few pics of it.

Looks OK to me. As you say, the pickguard has been changed, but the 12th fret dots and serial# concur with a 2002 MIM '50s Classic in two-tone sunburst. I had one of these for a while - nice guitars and the stock pickups aren't bad either. I say go for it.

Thanks,

It sure looks genuine except for the pickguard which is supposed to be 1 ply white with 5 screws.

...which tend to warp, so one can see why a swap might be made. I agree it looks legit.

Yep, that's a genuine one. The grain is nice on that particular guitar, much nicer then a lot of them. I'd go for it then change the guard again.

Agree with TT - though I'm not too impressed with the bridge pup. The neck pup OTOH is in the same league as the OV ('52RI) neck pup.

That case is an upgrade too. I believe they usually just come with a gig bag.

Everything looks right to me, 'cept for obviously changed PG. Also agree that the grain on that 2 tone is very nice without the matching weirdness that's often seen. I think that these in 2TSB also look very nice with a single ply black PG.

So after a long week of waiting on my first tele, they day is finally here. The sale was a real hit and run. train, short walk, short talk and testing, and on the train again. The owner didn't have the case anymore, but that's ok. I ordered a new original white pickguard. Untill it arrives i'm going to keep the strings on it. I tested it on my champion 600 and scxd and it sound better than i hoped. I am beginning to think that the original pickups are replaced with something better. I will have to wait for the new pickguard to find out. Here is a pic when i just got it home.

Is there a chance it wouldn't be legit? Do these sell for more than new Mexican Fenders?

The OP wanted to know if a 2002 Mexican Tele is legit, the implication being that someone would try to "fake" it why would someone do that? Does it have some value beyond its intrinsic value as a used guitar?

To my untrained eye it looks exactly like my classic 50',I only recently bought mine too! I've installed some bareknuckle flat 50's and in the process of setting up and adjusting the action etc....

I found the stock bridge pick up to be very bright, apart from that you can't go wrong!

Hope you enjoy it!

So i found out that this guitar has "modified" pickups. They sound bloody awfull. What pickup set comes close to the original classic series pickups?? Custom shop nocaster or original vintage set?

Wow, thats too bad!

My guess would be Original Vintage, based on personal experience. You can't go wrong either way though.
