Freddie King CD

I just finished listening to Freddie King "The Shelter Records Years" CD and it is excellent! This Cd showcases Freddie's vocals as well as his great guitar work.Leon Russell is on piano on some of the cuts.

This CD reminded me again why Freddie King is one of the Blues greats of all time.[and one of my favorites]

Get Just Pickin'

See the LP cover in Tom P's post. The CD contains nothing but Freddie's instrumentals. I like the Shelter Years stuff, too, but the earlier stuff really knocks my socks off, and I NEVER get tired of Just Pickin. I also have some Freddie King DVDs of some 60s performances that are a gas, too. Even though Freddie is recognized as a blues master, I still think he's under-rated and under-known.

Does "Just Pickin'" have all the same instrumentals as
"Lets Hide and Dance Away"?

Freddie King is great from all his career. As said Just Pickin is a classic album (I think all guitar players should learn at least four songs from it!) but it doesn't have the passionate stuff that he recorded later, especially live. The four live videos that are available (The Beat, Live in Dallas, etc) are really good. There's a double best of type CD out called King of the Blues that has a ton of tunes.

Mr. Hideaway

I used to see Freddy play at the old Ashgrove in Los Angeles during the 60's and very early 70's. I was in the first row and his sweat was hitting all of us....but man, was he cool. Big ol fat fingers and that great Gibson. He only played about 6 or 7 different licks but he sure knew where to put 'em.
What a thrill to see him play in person back then...he was great.

When I was 16 a friend & I had tickets to see Jeff beck in Dallas. We couldn't get a ride so we left early ,& hitchhiked from Ft Worth. Well we got a ride right off the bat. We got to the Majestic Theater just after the 1st show started. We had tickets to the second show...so we were just standing around out front (the only ones there) when a car pulled up in front of the Theater. Out gets this big dude with a guitar case. He walked up to us ,& said How do you recon I'd go about getting in here. We looked at the case ,& it had Freddie King stenciled on it. We just kinda studdered out I imagine you could just walk through the front door. He smiled that big ol smile ,said "thanks" shook both our hands ,& went inside. I don't know if he "jamed" with Jeff in the 1st show or not. But he didn't play in the second one :( I would love to have seen him play. I'm as big a fan of his as Eric Clapton is :D I just can't "steal" his licks as good

Not bad

for a guy that only knew about 6 or 7 licks. I've been trying to master "The Stumble" for the past 3 years and still don't have it down. "Hideaway" as well, a bit simpler, but nobody, even SRV or Clapton can play it like him....

A triple threat IMHO....

A great player, and fantastic singer but I'm always impressed by his writing. He works in a very predictable formula but makes the songs unique whether they are instrumentals like Hideaway or The Stumble or vocal numbers such as Key to the Highway or Goin' Down.

THe Stumble!

"The Stumble" is a great song. I've tracked down about 6 versions -- the "best" IMO being Bill Hullet's from "Two-Lane Blacktop.

Does anyone have the tab on this tune?

Thanks,
(daveschief@earthlink.net)

I don't know about tab but Duke Robillard goes over it pretty thoroughly on his Freddie King instructional video, along with Hideaway and San-Ho-Zay.

(Just happened to be listening to Remington Ride when I opened the page and this thread was at the top)

There is tab out there for some of his instrumentals
but can't remember where I saw it.
Use search and try Stumble tab or Hideaway tab
and some ones should come up.

don't forget

his picking technique. I believe he used a thumbpick and two fingerpicks.

What a show man Freddie was. I love the suit he wears in The Beat while performing in Sweden.

cheers
Erik

Ronnie Earl

also does a great rendition of The Stumble. I love SRV's version of Hide Away.

Freddie's tab is a Hal Leonard book. I'm sure anyone can find it on a Google search.

Freddie

I recorded the Stumble, San Jose, Just Pickin, & In the Open, on my cds.
I can assure y'all, Freddie had more than 6 or 7 licks.

Thanks for the posting and it means a lot coming from a player of your caliber.
Freddy had a lot more than 6-7 licks and I have a DVD of Freddy King"Live at the Sugar Bowl"[1972] and it showcases his great talent as a player and a vocalist.
This is a MUST DVD for serious blues fans and you will not be disappointed with it.

I thought I had "Hideaway" down pretty good and tried to play it at a jam. I screwed up the first verse (?) and somebody else took over and played the Peter Green version.

I can't get "The Stumble" at all. :(

"A Woman Across The River"

I got "A Woman Across The River" from my local library and it is I believe his last disc with Shelter.

Mind you, it is not pure blues but some really nice stuff-lotta soul.

For some reason I always think "Muscle Shoals" when I listen to this disc.
