Vintage tele (51 or 52?) on ebay?

I suppose, most of you have seen this one by now, but what do you make of it?
Description says it's a '54 but looks like a 51 or 52 to me with that poodle case. If it is legit, it's a bargain!!

looks

good to me, but more like a 52 not a 54. The dark butterscotch finish, decal cloud shape and lettering and the slot string tree and case say 52. I think the seller may just be missinformed about guitars (fret plates??). The current high bidder deals with guitars and I am pretty sure he made his homework with the seller before placing a 12k bid. Shame we cant see better shots. We will probably see it back up for sale with better pics and descprition for 20k soon :(

When

did fender start using phillips head screws? All the old teles I have seen, early 50s, have had slotted screws at the neck and for the rest of the hardware. I had a 61 that used phillips head. Good looking guitar dont know if it's ligit though.

No later than 51. But Teles weren't all Phillips until late 53 I believe.

Bigsby?

Do you think the three marks behind the bridge mean that it once had a Bigsby?

Nacho - did the logo change between 52 and 54?

Could it be a 51 with that serial number?

    Carrots...

I need to eat more - I can't see enough detail in those blurred pics to see the 12th fret markers spacing.

Ole Fuzzy - are you using anti-fuzz viewing software?!

Why would anyone think this is a good way to sell a valuable guitar.

    hey David

logos between 50 and 54 change all the time but there are some paterns to be followed, especially in the clear "halo shape". In the book that Ive written theres a time line pic comparison of all the possible halos shapes pictured under blacklight that shows this particular detail.
i hope youre enjoying your fiddytwo.
    take care

    Hi Nacho

Thanks for the logo info - I look forward to reading all about it later this year!

That 52 is now my no.1 guitar! I often play it unplugged as well and love the way it resonates. The neck is just great too - so, so comfortable. Thanks again for sending it my way.

The one thing I have been wondering about - if that is a guitar that you could bear to part with, you must have some amazing playing guitars in your collection!

    Best wishes, David

PS I have just remembered that you were going to send me a copy of the CD that you were recording back then. If you have a spare copy handy I would still like to hear it. Thanks.
