Which Tele Neck?

I'm 6'4 and have huge, huge, hands. I've been playing a gibson neck for 20 years, picked up a tele in the shop and just fell in love with the neck!

Which neck has more girth? modern american or mexican tele's? and do the modern mexican tele's come with jumbo frets? sweetwater's site doesnt say..

I'm sad those classic vibe necks are so tiny.

American Made Fender that I've played with a really fat neck is the 52HR.. IMO it's my fav..

MIM's that I have played that have fat necks & medium jumbo frets are the Joe Strummer tele.. fantastic neck but guitar is fugly.. Road Worn 50's great neck, mine needs a little fret work but I got it way below MSAP so i can live with it..

I hear that Classic Vibes & Baja's have nice fat necks to but haven't tried them out..

Jerry I'm really digging the neck on my hot rod as well! I've always leaned to a beefier neck. The Valley Arts Brent Mason has the best I have ever played. It is so fast & not so sticky.

Sounds like you are wanting medium (not vintage) frets and that rules out the older No-Casters and rules out the G E Smith model.

I suspect the AV52, while big to many, would be too small for you AND it too has vintage frets. Check out the MIM Classic Player Baja ( a bit bigger neck ) and the HR52 which has already been mentioned. I think the newest version of the CS No-Caster gets bigger frets this time.

If you shop at Guitar Center, they had a special "FSR" offering like a few months ago (one of many FSRs they've done lately) that had a 5db mid-boost feature. That model is a short term limited supply one but it has a neck very much like the Baja, and is reasonably priced (MIM). You may have to call around to find one that is left.

Just want to mention that the 52 HR neck is slightly thicker than the 52 AV or at least that was the case with the 2 I tried out..

I didn't know if others had spotted the similarity, but yeah, I'd say that's definitely a Baja-shaped neck, and the price is right (~$550 if I recall). They have them in Inca Silver and Sunburst at the North Austin GC if the OP is interested.

You won't be disappointed, I'm used to les Paul type guitars and the Baja fits a treat. Enjoy. :)

I'm sitting here playing something you'd probably love. It's not anything you can buy at the store; it's a build from my buddy Tony Mellichampe, and he had this massive neck sitting at his shop -- 1.75" nut, MASSIVE baseball-bat thickness all the way down (1"); it's bigger than the next biggest neck I have (on his Nocaster version), and dwarfs my 52RI and my GESmith. If you find that Baja neck doesn't do it for you ... go check out Musikraft Tele neck spec page. $200 buys you a nice fatty!
