1962 Fender Tele, Made in Japan, mint, $750
OK, I did a search and couldn't find the answer I needed, so . . .
Ad in todays' paper had the above (Subject) for sale. He had other things in the ad, but I called and asked about this one. He said, "It is not a re-issue, but a mint condition original." The ad stated - OBO! He left a phone number and an email address . . . My question . . . did Japan build Fender Teles back in '62? I though the only ones with this date were the re-issues? Thanks . . . |

I could be wrong but my understanding was that Fender Japan didn't exist until 1983.
Funny, I used to play this gig with a guy who insisted his 'Crafted in Japan' Jazz bass was built in 1975, and that he got it for a steal from the original owner for only $750!

Yea . . . I thought so. I looked on the "Dating Fender Gutars" website, and the frist year noted for MIJ's was 1982.
I got to call him back to listen to more of his BS . . . he also lists a 1921 Martin for sale :? |

Heck, we had a newbie on here a couple of months ago who was asking a simple question, but also mentioned owning a 1964 Gibson Les Paul. Absolutely NO ONE (myself included) enlightened the guy about the impossibility of such an instrument! A guy at the bar last Sunday night, tried to sell me an Ampeg guitar amp that he INSISTED was a 1965. The guy knows me well enough to know that I know better, but he INSISTED it was INDEED a 1965. The amp was a V4 head, with a "Distortion" control, so we're talking late 70's here. When I dug up some info and showed it to him, he was P.O'd. He was asking $1000 for it, and I said "Man, it's not even worth $500." There still a lot of people out there that think that the Broadcaster came out in 1948 (and some claim 1946).

C'mon now ...
Sure, maybe the guy is a bunko artist (but not a very ambitious one for $750 obo), but he probably is just a little mixed about what is a reissue. It's probably a 62 reissue from the 80s, which are great guitars. Either way, it's not the craziest price in the world one way or another and it's probably a nice guitar.
Publish his e-mail? Geez. You guys act like he's trying to sell a 51 original MIJ Esquire for 20 grand. Not everybody can be a telenerd brainiac like us. Let's try to use our powers for the forces of good and not to tear a new one into every poor slob who doesn't know exactly what he is selling. Thanks. rant finis

It's usually, in my experience, more of a pride issue. I know from experience, it sucks to come out looking like an idiot, when you thought you were king of the heap. Nobody wants to believe they got taken by a load of B.S. So they try to perpetuate the myth they've bought into. I'm not making excuses for anybody, and there are people out there, no question, who will try to rook you every chance they get. But most of the local yoakles with 1827 Ibanez Destroyers are just mis-informed, got ripped off, and don't want to accept it. Jake
