Do you do anything to treat the paper label?

This seems like a great idea, but I to wonder about the durability of the paper label. Would a laquer or poly coating work? maybe you could just tape and do the label ?

Or.... you let the paper wear out, and make another one.

Let the paper label wear out, scratch the record with a needle and you have a "relic".

Correct. The "Hot Lead" version. Pretty good pu's for the money. Halfway decent coil-tapped tone as well.

How would you actually cut it to get a clean cut?...you could pattern it obviously from the current one on your guitar ..but how would you cut it clean.....I don't know a lot about tools....some kind of jig saw I'm assuming....the kind they use for inlays maybe? not sure what it's called....does anyone do this?

I haven't tried it yet but you have a stack of vinyls so maybe you can do a few tests to find the best way to do it.................?

I used a pair of sewing shears for the straight edges. I'm sure scissors would work just fine. For the curves, I used masking tape to hold my old pick guard and the lp together, then used a dremel tool to sand the vinyl down to shape. For the neck pu, I drilled a couple holes, then dremeled that too. Bit of hand sanding to take of the burs and it was done. Doesn't stand up to close inspection but it took me all of half an hour. I'm not to worried about. I can always make another one for a dollar and 30 mins. of time.

Somewhere deep in the TDPRI archives there's a thread about making pickguards out of old 78s, because they're similar (identical?) to the "bakelite" material originally used for black pickguards. I think those had the grooves sanded off, and no labels.

careful with masking tape on the labels.... it rips the print off....

I use tin snips to rough cut . or a 4" grinder and files/sandpaper ...

they're cheap and abundant...all colors and brands.... an endless resource..funky!...

I found some old bakelites with "Mercury Esquire" labels...

. I bet you can't guess what that's going on?...

I keep trawling the charity shops round here for LPs I could use for a pickguard.

I want to find one with the Stax label on it, or the Motown one.

Would look great on a Tele for the soul band I play in.

Like i said I have a ton of albums from
Motown to techno to classic rock. Newer rock hip hop all different colors and labels. I have a Kool and the Gang record you might like for your jazz band. I'm pulling all my vinyl out of storage today to see what I have. I know I have some cool transparent blues and reds. Mint green. Marble. Picture discs. Hit my email up. I'll post some pics when I figure out how to cut them. I'll go through and post pics of the cool ones. Just the cook ones. And Of course tons of black vinyl.

Here is a picture of my telecaster with the white pickguard, and a picture of the record I'm going to use..I've already put the template on it so see where It needs to be cut, then I will need it beveled at a 45% angel on the edges then drilled for screw holes...once the holes are drilled a slightly bigger bit will need to be drilled on top of the holes for the head of the screw to fit....
