I recently tried
an Affinity in a nice Butterscotch colour and I was very impressed. I hadn't tried any Squiers since the first Strats came out many years ago. I must say that the quality has improved a great deal since those early days.
I was just using the Tele in a shop while trying some effects pedals out. The Squire Tele was more impressive (and not much more expensive @ £129) than many of the pedals I tried!

The other days I tried out a number of Squiers and MIM Standards, Teles and Strats, at a Guitar Center, all were well made and playable, although the string action was set on the high side and they all could use a set up (i.e. adjustments). Overall I was very impressed with what you could buy for under 200 bucks! No quality issues at all: fretwork, fit and finish all good. Especially a stunning Squier sunburst Strat, rosewood fret board for under $200.

I got an Affinity Butterscotch for my son. The pickups are surprisingly good, but I changed all the electronics. CTS 250K pots, real Tele switch, .022 cap, and shielded it.
It's really good now. I had to file the fret ends. Kept the pickups. The guitar in general is really good. Here are the photos... http://photoweborama.com/v-web/gallery/stele |

The fret end problem I found out has to do with humidity. If you’re in a more humid area, you don't have that problem. And if you mail order one like we did, and you live in a more humid area, you just let it sit a couple of days and the wood will swell up and it will be just fine.
But in Sacramento, I had to take a file to them. They were "cut your hand" sharp. Just took a file at a 45 degree angle, a quick run up and down and it's done. |
