US 1

There are probably many people out here on the TDPRI who will want to shoot me for saying this, but I just picked up a honey blonde Fender US Highway 1 series Tele. I have a played the 52 RI several times in various shops. I think the US 1 is pretty close if not equal in comparison to presence and quality of the 52RI. When the US 1 Strats came out I asked my local Sam Ash guy how they were and he said they were "American but just above the Mexicans in quality." After purchasing a US 1 Tele, it was clear to me that this salesman's "educated opinion" was just another homage to his district manager's motto to downgrade the good deals and push the top shelf products!

Several points to be considered for the US 1 Tele:

1) String-thru body
2) vintage 3 saddle bridge
3) vintage tone
4) "Made in USA" on headstock
and finally-
5) $599- about HALF the tag of the 52RI!!!!!

The only downside I can think of is that US 1s have a "thinner" finish. The paint job does feel like it will wear down in just a few years. But you know what? For me that's a blessing. I want it to wear down to the woodgrain. Older, beat up looking Teles look beter anyway. Anyone from the Boss to Roy Buchanan's ghost will tell you that!

50's classic

Take a look at a MIM 50's classic, might get you into a close enough neighborhood.

What has vintage style

IMHO, the Hiway 1 won't cut it if you are looking for vintage feel. It has a "c" shaped neck, 9.5 radius, satin finish, med/jumbo frets, modern tuners and "Made in the U.S.A. on the headstock. My 52 RI doesn't have any of these things. I saw one (Hiway 1) in the local music store the other day and was surprised that it didn't have a single-ply guard (it does in the Frontline magazine). The Classic 50s Tele has specs that are much closer to the 52 RI. Just pop out those p/ups, buy an ashtray (you wont really need it though), a tweed case, and....well you may as well buy the 52 Now! Check out the Classic specs on Fenders page, it's much the same as the Vintage Reissue.

The Muddy Waters tele has an ash body and pickups almost identical to the 52RI. But you have to like red!!
